The IdeaPad Y560 offers some unique features for an $1100 15-inch laptop including a Blu-ray drive and switchable ATI graphics. The switchable graphics will be very important as those wanting long battery life will need to turn the dedicated graphics off otherwise they will suffer below average battery life. The unique SlideNav feature also offers a unique way to launch frequent applications quickly.

Though the competition hasn't yet kicked in with myriad second gen Intel Core i7 laptops in this class, we suspect that the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560p will hold its rank near the top for performance vs. price just as did the last generation IdeaPad Y series. The laptop's performance is top notch, yet it remains cool and battery life is surprisingly good given the CPU and GPU inside. Gaming with the latest demanding 3D titles is simply joyful and the Y560p cut through 1080p video production. As an everyday productivity machine (hey, we all have to work sometime), the keyboard is superb, the display is sharp and solid for the price class and you get plenty of storage space for files, music and video. Our only complaint is the lack of graphics switching-- especially annoying because some of Lenovo's marketing literature and the included printed guide refer to this feature. For those who need more unplugged time when doing everyday tasks, this feature is sorely missing.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730: The HD 5730 is a higher clocked HD 5650 (and therefore not based on the desktop HD 5700 series). It does not support GDDR5 and therfore performs like a middle class graphics card with DirectX 11.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

AMD Radeon HD 6570M: Renamed Mobility Radeon HD 5700 series card with (optional?) GDDR5 support like the HD 5750.

Intel Core i5:

460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.  

720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

740QM:

2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
