According to the latest information from LeicaRumors, German camera manufacturer Leica is currently planning a new camera based on the Leica M11-P, but without the eponymous rangefinder. Instead, the camera is said to be getting an electronic viewfinder (EVF), which was previously only available as an optional clip-on viewfinder in the form of the Leica Visoflex 2.
An electronic viewfinder has several significant advantages over the traditional rangefinder. For example, the display in the viewfinder allows photographers to see the exact image section, depth of field and exposure before pressing the shutter button. Moreover, the upcoming Leica M11-V may be offered at a lower price, as the expensive rangefinder is now history. Maintenance costs would also be reduced, as an electronic viewfinder, unlike a rangefinder, does not require readjustment.
However, an electric viewfinder means that the Leica M11-V would also lose some of the advantages of the classic viewfinder, such as the ability to view areas outside the photographed area or the ability to manually focus particularly quickly and precisely. Since the Leica Photos iPhone app already contains references to the Leica M11-V, LeicaRumors assumes that the camera's launch is not far off. Apart from the viewfinder, it is said to be based on the Leica M11-P, so Leica will likely once again install a 60.3 MP full-frame sensor, 256 GB of storage, an SD card reader and dedicated shutter speed/ISO dials.
