Kokuyo Energy Line from Japan powers five devices without a single outlet

Desk power strips ($25 on Amazon) have long been standard equipment in many offices, but the design of these power strips is often bulky and not particularly elegant. That’s exactly where Kokuyo Energy Line aims to make an improvement, as this Japanese power strip does away with conventional outlets entirely.
Instead, the electrical contacts are arranged as rails, allowing a plug to be inserted at any point. If the plugs are narrow enough, up to five devices can be powered this way. The catch: The power strip is only compatible with two-prong flat plugs, so it requires adapters in Europe, and even in the U.S., devices with three-prong plugs aren’t compatible.
The power strip is mounted to the tabletop. Two screws allow the mounting to be adjusted for tabletops of varying thicknesses. As is typical with products of this kind, the desk can no longer be placed flush against a wall but must be positioned a few millimeters away. Although the Energy Line looks stylish, with its plastic housing and a price equivalent to $45, it is not positioned as a premium product.
Pricing and availability
The Kokuyo Energy Line power strip is available in Japan for CNY 7,400 ($45). While import via platforms like Zenmarket is an option, the manufacturer currently offers only a version for two-prong flat plugs, which is primarily compatible with conventional plugs in Japan and the U.S.
