Jio is now said to have its next carrier-branded smartphone ready to launch in India, with a starting price of well under US$150 thanks to specs that are last-gen to say the least. It is tipped to launch with a processor from an emerging chipmaker that may or may not help it keep up with potential rivals from Samsung or Realme - then again, it might also have the edge with 5G connectivity.

The INR 10,000 (US$122) or less segment of the Android smartphone market is blowing up these days with compelling options such as the Narzo N53 or Samsung Galaxy M04. Now, Jio will allegedly weigh in on the tier with a new competitor.

Its new in-the-wild leak courtesy of the leaker Arpit 'Satya Prakash' Patel (or @ArpitNahiMila) on Twitter suggests that it may not beat even the 50MP Nokia C32 for mobile appeal on a budget. It is depicted as having no more than three cameras in total: a 13+5MP rear-facing array and a 5MP selfie camera set into a water-drop notch as a practically archaic screen feature.

In fact, one of the more charitable things that can be said about the device as pictured is that it might make some users really miss their old Pocophone F1s. Nevertheless, the 'next Jio phone' also seems to have a UI that indicates 5G connectivity.

Arpit Patel hints that this spec may be conferred by Unisoc's latest line in SoCs - either that or the Dimensity 700. Therefore, while its silicon could also be less than new, it may be a worthy addition to Jio's growing series of branded smartphones.
