Intel’s Core-i9 7980XE 18-core flagship CPU is supposed to be launched on September 25, but it looks like somebody from South Korea already got their hands on the beast and has released benchmark and temperature information. The results were posted on the Korean bulletin board Coolenjoy.net, and the original poster also got to test the i9-7920X 12-core CPU that was launched on August 28.
All tests were conducted on an Asus Rampage VI APEX X299 motherboard, and the CPUs were connected to a water cooling setup. The Core i9-7980XE was overclocked to 4.8 GHz on all cores, with a vcore voltage set to 1.25 v and core temperatures reaching 83 centigrade (everything under 90 C is supposed to be fine).
The 18-core CPU scored 37,485 points in the FutureMark FirstStrike Physics benchmark with custom presets. This should be around 3 times faster than the i9-7900X 10-core CPU that scored 10,000 points with stock clocks and default benchmark settings. The poster did not provide FirstStrike results for the i9-7920X, though. From what we can see, it looks like the i9 CPUs do not disappoint in the overclocking department.
