Intel Arc Alchemist die size leaks out: 396mm2 Alchemist chip on par with the GA104 found in the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti
After Moore's Law is Dead outed leaked die shots of the Intel Arc Alchemist GPU, Twitter user @Locunza_ measured the GPU die. @Locunza_ discovered that DG2-512, Intel's largest Alchemist chip, measured 396mm2, roughly the same size as the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti's GA104 chip.
The implications here are clear, as far as performance is concerned. Initial reports suggested that Arc Alchemist would deliver performance on par with the GeForce RTX 3070. The similar die size indicates two parts with similar overall performance profiles. This means that Intel's first-generation desktop GPUs might not reach GA102 levels of performance, but might offer playable 4K framerates nevertheless.
Amid the current global GPU shortage, NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards are selling for 2 to 3 times their MSRP, with parts like the GeForce RTX 3070 going for as much as US$2000. In this situation, it remains unclear what the entry of the Arc Alchemist entails for the market. Whether it delivers competitive pricing or further aggravates the shortage remains to be seen.
