Apple has been working on 5G cellular modems for quite a while now, and some recent reports have further bolstered the claims. In addition to 5G, Apple has also been actively looking to work on 6G modems.
According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power Up newsletter issue, Apple has been putting out very specific job postings for engineers, who would be working on 6G reference architecture. Further, as per Gurman, if the modem is developed in-house, it would give Apple more control over technology and rake in more profits.
Currently, Apple uses modems made by Qualcomm. And as the companies have feuded a few times, Apple might like to develop this important iPhone component on its own. According to Gurman, Apple is speeding up the development of modems, so it won’t have to give to contract Qualcomm for it again.
In any case, users may not see 6G until 2030. However, the latest iPhones, that is, the iPhone 15 series with models such as the iPhone 15 Plus (curr. US$1,098 on Amazon), can give 5G connectivity.
