The iBUYPOWER Batallion 101 M571TU is certainly a system for those interested in PC gaming. With its high end Core 2 Duo mobile processor, DDR3 memory and GeForce GTX 280M graphics, it certainly can push the frames in today's 3D games. The system isn't without its issues however. Viewing just slightly off angle causes color washout on the display and the fan noise can get very loud when it is heavily used. There is also the price that is just above the $2000 mark.

What we like about the M865TU is that it provides decent application performance, a marked improvement in single-card notebook gaming, and a more portable size and weight—it’s lighter by two or more pounds than other gaming notebooks we’ve tested recently. Sadly, its battery life isn’t much better than the pack’s, lasting just one hour and 40 minutes when playing a movie in power-saving mode. Oh, and the speakers suck.

The iBuyPower Battalion 101 (M865TU) offers top-of-the-line gaming performance, even at its high native resolution. However, for over two grand, we wish that iBuyPower had paid as much attention to its notebook’s build quality and design as it did the hardware. The ASUS G51v costs about half as much, yet still provides reasonable performance in a far more interesting chassis. Nevertheless, if you want a powerful gaming laptop you can take with you, the iBuyPower Battalion 101 is worth a look.

Nearly all of today’s powerful gaming notebooks have at least one thing in common: They are typically bulky, desktop replacement–size systems that can weigh upwards of 11 pounds. The iBuypower M865TU ($2,049 list), on the other hand, is different. It delivers gaming-class power in a 15-inch chassis that won’t break your back. Unfortunately, you’ll have to lug around the power adapter, too, because this system’s battery life is woefully short. This gaming laptop offers solid performance and above-average connectivity in an uncommonly portable 15-inch frame. The battery life is subpar, however.

Good all-around performance can’t save this pricey touchscreen gaming rig from shoddy design. Despite putting up solid performance numbers, the $1,249 iBuyPower Battalion Touch CZ-10’s blood-letting design should’ve been scrapped in the design lab and given an overhaul before release, and we’re relieved that the company is changing the materials used in the logo.

With the Battalion Touch CZ-10, iBuypower presents a novel new idea in gaming notebooks—and, surprisingly, it doesn’t revolve around the touch-capable screen that this laptop features. It's this, instead: Make them portable and affordable. Your average gaming laptop weighs more than 10 pounds and runs more than $2,000. The CZ-10, on the other hand, weighs just over 6 pounds and starts at a buck under a grand. This winner of a gaming notebook features a multi-touch screen, surprisingly low pricing, and a truly portable design.

The Battalion 101 CZ-10 Premium from iBUYPOWER is designed to be a modest mobile gaming platform for the gamer on the go that doesn't want to spend too much. In order to achieve this goal, the laptop makes a few sacrifices in terms of battery life and peripheral ports but it does provide a very solid level of performance for its $1250 price tag. The price tag is a bit of an issue since similar laptops can be found for slightly less but iBUYPOWER offers a wide range of customizations to adjust the price of the unit.

iBUYPOWER's Battalion 101 LX-797 is their new Core i7 based 17-inch desktop replacement. The system has very strong performance thanks to the new processor and the DDR3 memory. While the general performance is strong, the graphics make the system less than optimal for gaming which is their primary audience. The system also comes with a small 250GB hard drive base but iBUYPOWER does offer a wide range of upgrades.

Ibuypower Battalion 101 W230SS

The Ibuypower Battalion 101 W230SS is a base model that can be vastly customised to suit a variety of gamers. Emphasis is on the word ‘vastly’. The silver interior and black case keeps ‘power’ looking classy, and the keyboard backlight glows ghostly blue. There is a 13.3 inch Full HD display (1920X1080) and 13 inch models are definitely a growing trend because of their portability.

Users can select up to the Intel Core i7-4910MQ quad-core processor clocked at 2.9 GHz with 8 MB L3 cache, and 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 G.SKILL RAM. A combination of 256 GB SSD as a primary drive and 1 TB SSD content drive can also be selected ensuring plenty of space while keeping speed. Powering the graphics is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M 2 GB GDDR5 with Nvidia Optimus.

On board is a 3D premium surround sound technology, which delivers superb audio quality. Other features on the Ibuypower Battalion 101 W230SS are Intel AC 7260 802.11 ac dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 3.0/eSata combination port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and a 2.0 megapixel digital web video camera. Powering the beast is a 6-cell Lithium-Ion battery.

If you want a compact laptop to be used for gaming and don't want to spend a huge amount of money, then the iBUYPOWER Battalion 101 W230SS is an option to consider thanks to its fast processor and solid graphics. Ibuypower: iBUYPOWER Computer is a enterprise located in Southern California. The product lines include gaming desktops, gaming notebooks, workstations, media center PCs, peripherals, and multimedia products. The global market share according laptops is low.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M:

The GeForce GTX 280M is based on the G92b chip with all 128 pipelines and, as a result, shares more similarities to the desktop 9800 GTX+ than the desktop GTX 280. Regardless, the high clock rate makes the GTX 280M considerably faster than the 9800M GTX.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M:

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M is essentially a higher clocked GeForce 9800M GTX based on the G92b core built under a 55nm manufacturing process. Because of the architectural difference, the 260M is less powerful (and quite dissimilar) to the similarly named desktop GeForce GTX 260.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M:

As the successor to the GeForce GT 445M, the GT 555M is available in many different versions based on different chips (GF106, GF116, GF108) with different graphics memory (128 Bit, 192 Bit, DDR3, GDDR5) and  varying core speeds.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M: Upper mid-range graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M: Upper mid-range graphics card from the GeForce GTX 800M series.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M: Upper mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GTX 900M series.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: The Mobility HD 4650 is based on the Desktop 4650 architecture, but features a lower clock rate of memory and core. Depending on the core clock (450-550MHz possible) and the used memory (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 with 600-800 MHz possible) the mobile 4650 can show a different performance. The current consumption of the chip alone ranges from 15-25W. Features Avivo HD video features.

NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M: The GPU has 96 shader cores but only a 128 bit memory bus that supports GDDR5 memory. With DDR3 memory, the GTS 250M performs clearly worse. Because of the 40nm process (and a selection process) the 250M offers a relatively low power consumption (the 260M needs 10W more).

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T9600:

High-end dual core CPU and similar to the Core 2 Duo P9700 but with a higher power consumption (35 W versus 28 W). Should be sufficient for all games of 2009.

P8700:

Mid-range dual core processor with 3 MB level 3 cache and a TDP of 25 Watt.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

2670QM: Fast Quad-core processor clocked at 2.2-3.1 GHz based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

4900MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.8 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.8 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

4700MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.4 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.4 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

4710MQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.5 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

Intel Core i5:

520M:

The Core i5-520M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-640M) and clocks between 2.4-2.93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD 3150) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

15.00:

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.1 kg:

3.7 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.

68.69%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
