Hungry For Batteries e-bike battery recycling program opens 1,800 drop-off locations in the US
Call2Recycle, in collaboration with PeopleForBikes, has launched an e-bike battery recycling program that intends to both increase public awareness about battery recycling and aid in the recycling process, according to CleanTechnica. Hungry For Batteries, as the initiative is called, has partnered with 52 major e-bike manufacturers to open 1,800 nationwide drop-off points at retailers where consumers can leave their e-bike batteries.
Though the list of industry players is long, including industry giants, like Bosch, Cannondale, Devinci, Giant, Marin, Shimano, and Specialized, among others, the program will only accept battery packs from the approved list of partners. Potential e-bike buyers may want to consult the list of participating brands to find out what to look for if they are interested in recycling the batteries further down the line.
The recycling program is even accepting damaged e-bike batteries — an important note, considering just how dangerous a damaged e-bike battery can be. After batteries are dropped off at a drop-off point (usually an e-bike dealer or other retail location), Call2Recycle coordinates collection of the batteries and manages the recycling process from there.
Call2Recycle is an established name in battery recycling, already having recycled over 140 million pounds of batteries in its 25-year existence, but the new recycling program is the first collaborative effort within the e-bike industry in the US to commit to recycling batteries. Despite the program's recent launch, it has already recycled 36,000 pounds of batteries.
