The Huawei P20 Pro is the company’s most ambitious smartphone to date, combining flagship features with an incredible camera. A number like 40MP is bound to get people interested, and the phone lives up to its billing as a photographic masterpiece, though it takes some getting used to, like any good DSLR.

The Huawei P20 Pro’s main camera being one of the best in the business may have contributed to the high expectations for its front-facing camera. The front camera’s specs are enticing, with a high-resolution sensor and fast-aperture lens, and its test performance was solid. So the P20 Pro’s front camera certainly has some strengths; but this said, it doesn’t really have the standout performance of its rear-facing camera.

In the P20 Pro Huawei has delivered a stunning phone which should be on your shortlist along with the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X. Huawei has arguably produced the best phone of 2018 in the P20 Pro. It looks great, lasts an age per charge, the camera is a top-ranking effort, and there's all the performance you could need. Thankfully it rights the wrongs of the P10, leaving little criticism to be made.

The Huawei P20 Pro is a solid smartphone that’s bound to impress both amateur and seasoned photographers alike. Thanks to its high-end specifications, stunning design and best-in-class tri-camera setup there’s a lot to like about Huawei’s latest flagship endeavour. Its launch price of £799 is undoubtedly less appealing, however, the Huawei name still doesn’t carry the same weight as Apple or Samsung in markets including the UK, so expect to see it available for less, soon if not already.

While the Huawei P20 Pro lives at the top of my 10 best smartphones ranking (as of 6 August 2018), there are some devices coming soon that will challenge it for this top spot. If you just look at the camera experience though, it may take a Huawei successor to knock it off that pedestal.

The Huawei P20 Series is a leap forward from an Industrial Design point of view, and the P20 Pro is an excellent representative of the new family. The new design is elegant, but packs an impressive battery capacity at the same time. The thinness comes at the expense of an internal wireless charging system, but we can overlook this because it charges so fast over USB-C.

As a camera-centric smartphone, the Huawei P20 Pro definitely passes the mark with flying colours. Great camera features, beautiful back cover design (Twilight and Blue), good battery longevity and an independent NPU which can improve the phone in the long term. We probably won't use it for gaming that much, but it's still playable nonetheless. It's hard to imagine how Huawei will outdo themselves in this one though, as the P20 Pro is quite a camera-centric smartphone monster.

The biggest challenge the P20 Pro in fact faces is the relative lack of brand equity that Huawei has in the premium segment of the Indian smartphone market. While its sub-brand Honor has a following (it is among the top five brands in the Indian smartphone market), its success has been built on value for money mid-segment devices rather than high-end premium ones. Indeed, there are already people pointing out that the P20 Pro costs more than the Honor View 10 and Honor 10 taken together, even though those devices sport similar processors and displays that are of largely similar resolutions.

I get the ‘AI this, and AI that’ is all about marketing the device’s photography potential, but it won’t do everything. Is this smartphone really a handy DSLR camera? Yes. This flagship produces quality photos and sometimes much better output than DSLR cameras because of its AI capabilities. Taking low-lit photos works like a charm as well and there’s no need to bring a tripod if you’re going on a street photowalk. Aside from its great cameras, it also offers great performance and battery life. Huawei has definitely stepped up in their flagship smartphones.

Huawei P20 Pro is an awesome device with great features and specs. It has a triple camera lens that collectively makes up to a 68MP lens that is super strong. The device is very expensive and its price is near to iPhone X but it is tough for people to spend that much money on Huawei’s device. It’s pretty clear that the main focus for Huawei with the P20 Pro is the camera. It’s not as if in the process the company ‘forgot’ to look at other aspects but it could’ve certainly done a better job. For starters, the notch seems totally forced and is a hindrance more than anything else. The display which otherwise works fine doesn’t score high with us. The processor delivers performance that will please most smartphone users but do we expect a smartphone that costs upwards of Rs 60,000 to heat up? It’s something that we have almost never encountered with a flagship device.

Five years ago, in 2013, the Nokia Lumia 1020 was introduced with a 41MP camera. And the latest Huawei P20 Pro is the first smartphone after the Nokia Lumia 1020 to have such a high-resolution camera. In between, a number of camera-centric smartphones that claimed to offer a DSLR-level picture quality were launched, but most couldn’t deliver. I still remember how unreliable the Asus ZenFone Zoom was. The Kodak Ektra was even worse.

So at the top of this review, I asked if this is the phone that is the best camera phone? Well in answer to that question, we have to look at both the camera and the phone. The camera is the most obvious bit of the puzzle, and while it is more than serviceable as a daily shooter, it has its areas of weakness. I am personally a fan of the colour saturation that is added from the scene modes, but I know that there will be some out there who aren’t. The good thing is that these can be turned off. The chance is though, if you are that much of a camera specialist that you are turning these functions off, then you will be able to detect the other foibles within the camera. For instance, at high zoom levels it will lose some crispness on the edges of the images.

It may not be as pretty as the Samsung Galaxy S9 , but the Huawei P20 Pro is at least its match. I found I liked it more. That’s for two reasons, first it feels better in my hand. This is a subjective measure. Less subject is the camera. Not only does it outperform the Galaxy S9 camera, but it is easier to get good results. Battery life is good too.

To conclude, the Huawei P20 Pro features some of the best cameras we have seen in a while on a smartphone. The AI integration is a real support to get some exceptional performance in the camera department. The phone is a real looker to flaunt. The display surely looks promising and battery performance is decent. However, the notch is a needless me too, and the user interface could be zippier. The absence of wireless charging is one bragging feature less, and so is the placement of the fingerprint sensor. But still, if you are a camera buff and want a good looking smartphone that takes some fantastic camera shots, then this will serve you well. Otherwise, the Samsung S9 series and the Apple toys will always beckon you too.

I suspect part of the P20 Pro’s allure is the fact that, in the US at least, Huawei is keeping it out of reach. Here on American shores, the company is focusing on the Mate 10 Pro, and has no current plans to offer this triple-camera marvel. That means you either stare enviously from the sidelines, or cough up the roughly $1k being asked for an unofficial import.

The P20 was launched alongside the P20 Pro and is the cheaper, smaller alternative to it, however, other than their names and the basic look of the phone, they have very little in common. The P20 lacks the P20 Pro's triple camera setup, losing the 3x optical telephoto lens, and using a completely different 20-megapixel RGB and 12-megapixel monochrome dual camera module. It also has an inferior 5.8-inch LCD display, a smaller 3,400mAh battery, 4GB RAM, and only has an IP53 rating (i.e. no water resistance). While the P20 is S$250 cheaper than the P20 Pro, it lacks everything that makes the P20 Pro special. The Huawei P20 Pro is one smartphone that offers a complete package in terms of beautiful design, long-lasting battery, good performance and impressive cameras. The latest operating system with some neat value additions on the EMUI 8.1 skin also help. It certainly seems to be set to break the Apple and Samsung duopoly, which the Google has tried to with its Pixel phones, but they’re more loved for their camera performance only. Huawei could not have asked for a better smartphone to relaunch with, in India. The goodwill it has garnered through its Honor sub-brand should surely help. Yes, it will be difficult to break the sheer brand perception that an Apple and Samsung have cemented in the minds of buyers, but if Huawei is able to deliver on the after-sales service, it is one brand that surely stand on its own.

The Huawei P20 Pro is an all rounding package that performs flawlessly on all departments. Having said that, the triple camera setup is not perfect and has its own set of limitations as well and the video quality is just average. Overall the P20 Pro is a huge improvement over the P10 on all the fronts, be it the display, camera, or the performance, but the price tag of Rs. 64,999 in India, for a phone with a FHD+ screen and average SoC (Compared to other flagships) is a bit too much.

In building the P20 Pro, Huawei wasn't just being ambitious — it was being audacious. The result is a flagship phone that's good enough to compete with the iPhones and Galaxys of the world. Don't get me wrong: It has its share of shortcomings, and the approach to software and emphasis on the camera ensure it won't make sense for everyone. That said, Huawei gets enough right here that I can't help but be disappointed that it will probably never go on sale in the US. The problem with the Huawei P20 Pro is that we don't have the phone's Canadian price tag yet. If the 899€ cost is equivalent to what the phone will be priced in Canada, which amounts to about $1400 CAD, I'd call the P20 Pro overpriced. It's hard to say whether the P20 Pro is overpriced, but there are more reasonably priced, almost as good handsets out there. However, it might be worth $1250 to $1,300, if it ends up priced in line with the iPhone X.

Additionally, at the S$898 price range, there are other phones with better displays and more powerful processors you should consider first, like the upcoming OnePlus 6, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s and Oppo R15.

The P20 Pro's price seems especially steep when you look at the competition. The Galaxy S9 and iPhone X grant faster performance and prettier displays, while the Pixel 2 brings a camera that is better than Huawei's in most situations, not to mention a truly modern Android experience. Worse yet for Huawei, all those phones start considerably cheaper, too.

Smartphones are plateauing, aren't they? There are those which come out with minor tweaks over the one being replaced - new display aspect ratio, chipset update, extra gig of RAM or two, something along those lines. And then, there's Huawei which offers true innovation with the P20 Pro catching everybody else off-guard.

That said, the Huawei P20 Pro is a great-looking, high-performance phone that's bursting with features. Its camera brings a lot to the table, with the hybrid zoom feature and low-light mode being particularly impressive. While it's not quite as powerful as the competition, it's a tempting option for anyone who wants to break away from the Apple/Samsung duopoly. We only wish it weren't so costly, and easier to get in the US.

In the P20 Pro Huawei has delivered a stunning phone which should be on your shortlist along with the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X. Instead of gimmicks and gaudiness, the Huawei P20 Pro delivers refinement and efficiency. That’s a major change for Huawei, which could previously be relied upon to be the fastest iPhone copycat in the East. With Huawei’s rapid improvement, Apple and Samsung now have a credible third competitor in the contest for super flagship phone supremacy. It’s time for the entire world to sit up and take notice, because Huawei is now the maker of 2018’s best phone and one of the best phones overall.

Huawei’s on the verge of a coup with the P20 Pro. While the triple camera may seem a gimmick at first, Huawei’s AI smarts plus clever integration of the three shooters make the phone one of the best around if you’re really serious about mobile photography. Huawei has held nothing back in the camera department when they made the P20 Pro, leveraging heavily on their AI tech. One look at the images produced by the phone tells you that the P20 Pro is simply the best smartphone for capturing images, especially in low light.

Ultimately, it all boils down to this: Huawei never did much business in the US, and so losing out on the market opportunity is costly but not a total disaster; the US, on the other hand, has landed in an uncomfortable duopoly situation that strangles consumer choice. The US phone market needs a respectable third player more than Huawei needs the US market.

This year again, Huawei has surprised us in many ways. The Huawei P20 Series is a leap forward from an Industrial Design point of view, and the P20 Pro is an excellent representative of the new family.
Positive: Nice design; compact size; good display; large screen; smart AI mode; excellent cameras; good price.

Comment
Model: The Huawei P20 Pro is a super flagship phone with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB. It competes with Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Apple’s iPhone X. Its highlights are its tri-lens main camera and long battery life. Moreover, the phone is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance.
Design and Connectivity
The Huawei P20 Pro looks stylish. The front and back are made of two big plates of rounded-off Gorilla Glass and the sides are made of polished aluminum. At a size of 155 x 73.9 x 7.8 mm and a weight of about 180 g, this phone is slimmer, yet slightly heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S9 (147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 mm; 163 g). In contrast to the Samsung, Huawei's screen does not curve around at the sides. As the iPhone X, the Huawei P20 Pro has a notch, a displaycut-out used for the camera and speaker here. If you do not like the notch, it can be software hidden in the settings.
www.techradar.com finds that sheer reflective spangliness makes this phone stand out. According to www.theverge.com, the phone rests softly in the palm of your hand with its perfectly contoured sides and feels surprisingly rigid and durable for a phone with glass on both the front and back. They describe the phone as easy to pick up and grip securely. However, www.theverge.com also has two minor complaints about the industrial design: The rear glass picks up fingerprints easily and the phone lays – just as Apple’s iPhone X – imbalanced on a flat surface due to the size of its camera bump.
The Huawei P20 Pro can connect to carrier networks via LTE TDD, LTE FDD, WCDMA, EDGE, and GPRS. It supports GPS, AGPS, Glonass, and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. Vlad Savov from www.theverge.com writes that the P20 Pro delivered the best possible mobile data speeds wherever he was, and he had no dropped calls even in areas of spotty coverage. According to www.digitaltrends.com the phone only uses Bluetooth version 4.2, instead of Bluetooth 5.
Home button, Fingerprint sensor, and 2D Face recognition
In contrast to competitors, Huawei retained the fingerprint sensor at the front. It is integrated in the physical home button. www.theverge.com thinks that this position makes it easier and more intuitive to use than rear-mounted ones and it is astonishingly fast and accurate. Josh Levenson from www.trustedreviews.com writes that he often found himself hitting both the capacitive and virtual Home button at the same time, thus launching Google Assistant.
In addition to the fingerprint ID system, the phone features Face Unlock, which is instant in almost all circumstances on this phone according to www.theverge.com. However, this site finds that this system is not as secure as Apple’s more sophisticated Face ID. www.techradar.com confirms that the face unlock is exceptionally fast and is built for speed rather than security, since it simply reads the high-resolution feed from its front camera to recognize your face rather than using clever IR techniques like the iPhone X. Other online magazines also shares this opinion.
Cameras
The tri-lens camera on the back consists of 40 MP (RGB, f/1.8 aperture), 20 MP (Monochrome, f/1.6 aperture), and 8 MP (Telephoto, f/2.4 aperture) sensors and supports autofocus (laser focus, deep focus, phase focus, contrast focus). www.theverge.com describes that when the default (and highest quality) setting is used, Huawei combines four pixels into one with the combined light information from the whole 40 MP sensor, which produces produces sharper, cleaner images at a lower resolution. They call the low-light performance “shockingly impressive”. The tester evaluates, “Huawei’s new camera system is, in my judgment, superior to those on the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X”. www.techradar.com confirms that the real star here is low light performance.
Huawei’s camera software provides a plethora of features including a Pro mode for tweaking every possible parameter. In addition, Huawei’s new Master AI system can make all the adjustments on your behalf. According to www.theverge.com, Master AI aims at producing the most pleasing, not necessarily the most realistic photos by intelligently applying subtle filters to all your shots. Their tester finds that Huawei’s optional Huawei Master AI makes more aggressive alterations and does not always get things right, though its judgment was good enough for him to be okay with keeping it on all the time. www.techradar.com writes that some shots get near-toxic levels of color saturation. The 20 MP black and white sensor helps with processing, including decreasing image noise and improving dynamic range. www.wired.co.uk explains that it can do this because a B&W sensor has higher native sensitivity than a standard one. The 8 MP sensor is used to provide a 3x optical zoom or a 5x so-called hybrid zoom. According to www.techradar.com, the hybrid zoom makes far-away text clearer and uses smart upscaling to make the photos look right rather than blurred like a simple digital zoom.
www.theverge.com praises the camera’s night mode as the biggest advantage that Huawei now enjoys over its competition. They write that despite an exposure time of 4 seconds handheld photos remain sharp, accurate, and practically noise-free. www.techradar.com finds, “Using night mode, you can get ultra-dark shots with dynamic range and detail far in excess of any LG, Sony, Apple or HTC phone.” www.digitaltrends.com even praises, “The P20 Pro is not just a smartphone, it’s a proper camera.” However, they would like faster access to the Monochrome and slow motion video modes, which are hidden under a “More” option in the camera app.
www.wired.co.uk compares the P20 Pro’s main camera to the competitors’ and finds that the Pixel 2 has better HDR processing, the Galaxy S9’s optical image stabilization still outclasses the processing approach at times, and the iPhone X’s color is often more natural-looking. www.techradar.com says that video recording is possible with up to 4K resolution, but lack of image stabilization makes footage look juddery and amateurish, while the software stabilization is extremely effective at 1080p. Slow motion recording is supported.
The single-lens front camera features 24 MP and a f/2.0 aperture. It supports fixed focal length. www.techradar.com says that the high resolution is not all that obvious in the shots it takes and the Pixel 2 still takes clearer selfies with cleaner looking fine detail. www.wired.co.uk also finds that the Pixel 2 takes better selfies.
Display
The 6.1-inch display uses the OLED technology and features 16.7 M colors, FHD+ resolution (1.080 x 2.240 pixels), a pixel density of 408 PPI and a 18.7:9 aspect ratio. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus features 529 PPI. www.theverge.com finds that, just as the OLED displays in the iPhone X and Galaxy S9, this one can also be used comfortably in bright outdoor conditions, and provides plenty of sharpness, contrast, and accuracy. www.techradar.com summarizes that display quality is excellent, blacks are perfect, there is only minimal blue cast when the phone is tilted. www.digitaltrends.com says that the display is visible in daylight, and looks great when viewing photos and video, with excellent color reproduction and contrast levels.
You can choose between a couple of color modes. According to www.theverge.com you will get just the right amount of saturation and vividness with the Natural one. Moreover, the phone can automatically adjust the color temperature depending on the ambient light, which worked brilliantly according to www.theverge.com.
Hardware, Software, and Performance
The Huawei P20 Pro features a Huawei Kirin 970 octa-core CPU with four Cortex A73 cores ( up to 2.36 GHz) and four Cortex A53 cores (up to 1.8 GHz), 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB. The CPU incorporates ARM's Mali G72 (12 core) IGP operating at 850 MHz. www.techradar.com write that high-end games run very well on the phone, with no obvious performance dips in the titles they tried, although the phone does not have the most powerful GPU in the phone world. They complain that the phone does not currently support Full HD streaming through Netflix and report the following benchmark results: 6,775 points (1,918 per core) in Geekbench 4 (Galaxy S9/Snapdragon 845: ~ 9,000; iPhone X: ~ 10,000). They praise that the internal storage is pretty quick at read speeds of 501 MB/s and write speeds of 190 MB/s. www.digitaltrends.com reports scores of 210,342 in AnTuTu 3D and 2,935 in 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme and summarizes, “We experienced no performance problems with games, or system stability issues during day-to-day use.” www.wired.co.uk finds that the Kirin 970 CPU is not as quick as the iPhone X’s A11 Bionic or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 in Samsung’s Galaxy S9, however, only those who put their phones through abstract benchmark tests are likely to care.
The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo with Huawei’s EMUI 8.1 skin. According to www.techradar.com this means that you will get an iOS-like arrangement where all your apps end up on the home screens instead of an apps menu, which you can bring back via the settings, out-of-the-box. They evaluate, “EMUI’s performance in the Huawei P20 Pro is excellent. It feels extremely fast and responsive, and app load times are much shorter than those of a mid-range phone.” www.theverge.com confirms that the P20 Pro works super reliable. The tester appreciated having a dark mode, which he thinks is an increasingly valuable feature for phones with OLED displays. Furthermore, he liked that deviations from Google’s original Android design can mostly be sidestepped or disabled. However, the software adaptations to the notch on the top of the screen could be better.
Battery Life
The 4000-mAh battery lasts very long. It supports fast charging, but, unlike the Samsung Galaxy S9 and iPhone X, not wireless charging. www.techradar.com found it quite easy to finish the day with 40% charge. The Huawei P20 Pro only lost 9% in their standard video playback test (playback of a 90-minute video at maximum brightness). This page also praises that the supplied fast charger only takes 1 hour 24 minutes to get the Huawei P20 Pro from completely flat to 100%. Other online magazines report similar battery life results.
Audio and call quality
According to www.theverge.com the speaker on this phone gets loud without ever becoming shrill or distorted. While it lacks a headphone jack, Huawei supports LDAC for higher-bitrate Bluetooth streaming. The tester says, “I was super impressed with the strength and reliability of Bluetooth connections with the P20 Pro”. www.techradar.com confirms that the phone has good speakers with good bass for a phone and unusually solid separation of the parts of a mix. They summarize, “It’s not at the level of the Razer Phone, but does make podcasts and YouTube videos enjoyable”. www.trustedreviews.com shares the opinion that the two stereo speakers sound fantastic, delivering clear and rich audio at even the loudest of volumes. www.yugatech.com finds that call quality is excellent.
Summary
Advantages of this phone are its tri-lens main camera, especially the handheld ultra low light performance, and long battery life. www.techradar.com summarizes, “It's a top-end phone with a price to match, yet has everything needed in a world-class handset, including a very capable camera, plenty of power, great battery life and an impressive build.” According to them this is a phone for those who want new and exciting tech and find the iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus are too expensive. www.trustedreviews.com summarizes, “A fantastic high-end smartphone with an even more fantastic camera.”
Alternatives include the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and iPhone X. The Huawei is much cheaper as both of them. It costs about 899,00 Euros (as of 04-09-2018) at amazon.de and about £799 in the UK. It will not be available in the US. www.theverge.com prefers the P20 Pro over Samsung’s 2018 flagship since Huawei offers the more potent camera, better ergonomics, longer battery life, even has a less irritating Android skin.
