The 256GB Huawei Mate RS has a European price of 1,695 euros, compared to the P20 Pro’s 899 euro (~$1,050) price tag. Meanwhile, readers in the U.K. can expect to pay 1,500 pounds (~$1,980). Up the ante to 512GB and you’ll be paying 2,095 euros (~$2,450). It’s unclear if the U.K. will receive the 512GB model.

In my brief time with the phone, I loved the design aesthetic and high-end features, but the jaw-dropping price made me worried about accidentally dropping the phone, which wouldn't be cheap to replace.

A largely excellent high-end smartphone that’s let down by gremlins. You should expect better when spending this amount of cash.

The Mate RS comes with more optional storage than any phone before it, a new cooling system and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. The rest is basically a Huawei P20 Pro in a Porsche Design body. So yes, this phone is incredibly expensive, but unlike many luxury items, it delivers both style and substance.

Featuring a beautiful design, insane amounts of storage and a few nifty additions, like wireless charging, the Mate RS is what the P20 Pro should have been. But, the price is ridiculous, even by top-end phone standards, and means that most people won’t be able to pick one up without selling a kidney. Even if you do have the cash to blow, I’d still recommend holding onto it until I’ve used it for a little longer and can comment on what it’s really like to live with.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS arrives at a really interesting time. With little to no "luxury" phone brands in existence - Vertu has fallen by the wayside - and a true focus on design and technology innovation (that doesn't depend on 24 carat gold or 150,000 Swarkovski crystals), there's a lot to impress.

Luxury smartphones have traditionally been expensive devices that don't really deliver when it comes to performance or technological innovation (the currently deceased Vertu, etc.). However, Huawei's recent Mate RS Porsche Design smartphone is breaking the mould by not only delivering best in class performance but also utilizing the latest components generally not used in consumer devices due to their higher cost instead of just relying on premium materials.

If you are like us and can’t afford to blow two months’ rent on a new smartphone, you’re probably pretty sad right now. But hey, today’s superphone is tomorrow’s normal phone. The very fact that a phone exists on the market with three cameras, an under-glass fingerprint sensor, 512GB of storage, and wireless charging, all in one, means that those features are coming soon to a more affordable device.

We are glad Huawei sprung into action and brought us two of the hottest flagships this season. The Mate RS was probably hotter still, but its price means it will always remain a niche product. It doesn't make it any less exciting, though.

There was once a time that a "luxury" phone often meant a compromise. There were any number of expensive handsets where the product didn't match the price and you were paying for the brand and perhaps an expensive finish. Not so with the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS.

This display is quite big for a smartphone but frequently used for smartphones.
Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.

Only few smartphones are more lightweight than this.
