When you’re saving so much money compared to its rivals and buying a laptop that has enough power to last many years, however, the reasons to buy hugely outweigh such small irritations. The MateBook 14 cements itself as a magnificent value ultraportable capable of outshining many more established Windows-dependent brands. If you can look past the battery life, you'll have bought yourself a fantastic laptop for a very competitive sum.

The Huawei MateBook 14 is a remarkable piece of kit. Not only does it abide by Huawei's time-honoured practice of producing exceptionally well-priced, well-built laptops, it also happens to be astonishingly – and I mean astonishingly – powerful. This sub-£1,000 laptop might look like a MacBook, but the resemblance isn't just skin deep. As Windows 10 ultraportables go, this one packs a punch.

For the most part, this Matebook 14 is a competent sub-1000 EUR/GBP compact laptop focused on productivity, with the help of the powerful Ryzen 4000 H hardware inside and the 3:2 display. Furthermore, Huawei nailed the design and construction for this price-segment, put in a fairly capable cooling solution, a large battery, and decent IO. At the same time, the inputs and audio could be improved, and if you're primarily interested in this for the Ryzen H hardware, you should be aware that this sort of implementation runs very hot with demanding CPU loads and is rather unbalanced for combined loads.

The Huawei MateBook 14 is a recommendable notebook for work, thanks to its hi-res and color-accurate display, capable CPU, large RAM, fast storage, and good battery life. At PHP 54,999, it’s less expensive than some ultrabooks with similar specs. We would have preferred a larger storage capacity, but that would probably push the price higher. It’s not a gaming laptop, though, but a great workhorse with features that will be utilized best by Huawei smartphone or tablet users.

The new Ryzen 5 4600H from AMD packs plenty of power under the hood, and is powerful enough for general purpose use, though we’ll have to see the limits of its capabilities in terms of gaming and other metrics on our review.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
