The Porsche Mate 9 isn’t a phone you should buy. It’s an extravagant piece of branded tech that doesn’t really do anything to justify its price tag.

The Porsche Design Mate 9 is a great phone selling at an insane price. It's got a gorgeous design, sure, but is it really that much better than the alternatives at half the price or less? Not really.

When is a great screen, strong performance, a fine camera and a desirable design not enough in a smartphone? When it comes with a ludicrous price tag, like the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design.

Should you buy either of them? If you’re after a smartphone that offers exceptional battery life, an intriguing dual camera and incredible performance, the Mate 9 delivers in spades. If money is no object and you want a smartphone that is unattainable to most customers, the Porsche Design Mate 9 is certainly worth considering.

The Porsche Design Mate 9 is a seriously impressive phone – but with a eye-watering retail price of 1350 Euros (around £1250/$1875), I suspect most of us will have to give this one a miss.

What can we say? Despite the bonkers price, the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design is a lovely looking phone. Well made and all powerful, it overshadows the standard Mate 9 to such an extent that now all we want is this limited edition version. Saying that, the Mate 9 name is kind of misleading. The Porsche Design's different screen size, body size, curved design front to back, plus repositioning of the fingerprint scanner make it a wholly different and wholly exciting phone.

In any case, the regular variant of the Mate 9 will be on our shores this month, while the Porsche Design edition to come some time later. We’ll be working on the regular Mate 9’s full review for the coming week, but in the meantime, here are some more photos of the best Huawei smartphone ever made.

Model: Like a Porsche amongst automobiles, the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design is in a class of its own in the world of smartphones. This device is the product of the joint venture between the Chinese manufacturer and Porsche Design, the merchandizing branch of Porsche, which is already famous for things like spectacle frames and even perfumes. Just like a Porsche, it is top-notched both in aesthetics and substance. At first sight, the elements of Porsche Design strongly emanates from its form factor. Its exterior boasts a True Curve Design with graphite black brushed metal body as well as a black curved Gorilla-Glass front. It maintains a slim build at 7.5 mm and weighs 169 g. It also comes accessorized with a customized leather smart cover. On the display front, it is fitted with 5.5" curved AMOLED display with WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution, its major difference compared to the Mate 9, which features a regular flat display with Full HD resolution. Sharpness and clarity on this screen are highly superior. It is more than capable of handling heavy media content on its rich display. What drives this smartphone is equally inspiring. It is powered by the Kirin 960 chipset with 6 GB of RAM. Both gaming and video experience are enriched by the Mate 9 Porsche Design’s stereo speakers. Storage available on this smartphone is a massive 256 GB internal flash-memory. In this case, the lack of a microSD slot is negligible.
For optics, it is fitted with the 2nd generation Leica dual camera with hybrid zoom. This dual lens system consists of a 12 MP RGB lens and a 20 MP monochrome lens. It is also integrated with a Pro mode, which allows users to fiddle with the settings such as ISO, shutter speed, and white balance. To a large extent, this configuration renders this smartphone an ideal replacement to a DSLR. Features on this device seem to be on constant overdrive, and its battery is no exception. The battery bundled with is a huge 4000 mAh model, which is able to last up to 2 days of use. It is coupled with super-fast charging capability, which is able to charge up to 58 percent in 30 minutes. The smart touch fingerprint sensor provides the device with maximum security. It also comes preloaded with the latest Android 7.0 Nougat. Further accessories provided include Porsche Design Premium Stereo Headset, a USB-C cable and two charger-plugs (UK and EU). It is definitely a ridiculously pricey phone as it is after all a Huawei Mate 9 in high gear. It is therefore hard to identify any potential rival for a smartphone with these specs.

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.

73%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
