Reviews for the Honor 9
Flashy. As with its predecessor, the Honor 9 compels at first sight with its flashy design of dancing light reflections on the back. But is this all just smoke and mirrors, or can Honor's new flagship also convince with its dual camera and fast performance? We find out in the test. Update: firmware B150 adds support for VoLTE and VoWifi.

Archive.org versionHonor 9 is an excellent device in all aspects although the price is a little expensive. Its great camera, brilliant performance, and stylish design make it the best buy. Those users who are looking for a flagship device rather than the famous brand’s smartphones must go for Honor 9.

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 is an interesting case. It takes over from the Honor 8, a phone released in 2016 that sold at the same price and didn’t seem like an amazing buy at the time.

Archive.org versionWe're not alone in being puzzled by exactly what Huawei wants to do with the Honor range in the Western markets. Elsewhere, it sells buckets and promotes it heavily. Here, I suspect even Huawei doesn't know – hence the lack of promotion. Nonetheless, the Honor 9 is some of Huawei's best ideas, without the Leica branding (and royalty fees).

Archive.org versionDesigned for the young at heart (at whatever age), the Honor 9 is the latest smartphone in the range to join the Huawei family of products. With this particular model, Huawei has attempted to combine aspects of quality, appearance and a price point that should appeal to its designated market sector.

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 delivers good performance and battery life, a decent 5.15-inch screen and an impressive dual camera setup. But how does it shape up versus its high-end Huawei P10 stablemate and the OnePlus 5, which is ploughing a similar 'affordable flagship' furrow?

Archive.org versionIn the end, the Honor 9 is an attractive option for international smartphone users who want a phone that's compact, a reasonably strong performer, enjoys solid battery life, and offers a decently nice camera – and all for quite a bit less than your typical flagship. There's no one stand-out area where the Honor 9 shines, but it does enough right to be worth recommending.

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 offers a lot of what the high-end flagship phones do right now, but for a much lower price. There’s no exciting, headline-grabbing feature here, but a great design, fantastic performance and lots of nice touches make this an all-round impressive and affordable phone.

Archive.org versionStill, it’s tough to find better for less. Unless you’re prepared to make a significant investment in a 2017 flagship, this is as much phone as you’ll get for your £400 right now.

Archive.org versionWhile the Honor 9 could be dismissed as simply a lesser-specced Huawei P10, in reality, having used both handsets as daily drivers, the Honor 9 simply has more heart, which is an admittedly weird thing to say about an inanimate object. The Honor 9 delivers in just about every area you would want, and despite the camera’s less-than-perfect performance in low-light conditions, the Honor 9 is another winner for the budget brand.

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 is an undeniably impressive phone for an unmatched price right now. In performance terms, it's nipping at the heels of the year's top flagships, and only lacking flashy features like waterproofing or a bezel-less screen. It looks great, it runs fast, and it costs less than £400. We're sold.

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 officially starts at €449 in Europe, but there are lots of offers out there and for £379 or €429 where you can get the 64 GB Honor 9 and a Honor Band 3 fitness tracker together. However, no matter what you pay you will be getting a phone packing pretty high-end specs – essentially the same as those found in Huawei’s other 2017 flagship devices but for a lot less money!

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 is a siren in the mid-range phone market. Its eye-catching design is paired with highly capable performance for a price point that, in the context of 2017, undercuts the OnePlus 5 by a sizeable enough margin to leave the Honor in a field of its own.

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 is a phone with some serious high-end chops that sells for a mid-range price. Archive.org versionThe honor 9 is really a refinement of its predecessor’s winning qualities. It’s an eye-catching phone, it’s well-equipped, and most importantly, it offers plenty value for money. For context, the honor 9 retails from 2,299 yuan in China – that comes up to only RM1,450.

Archive.org versionThe Honor 9 is a great-value handset that offers a similar flagship experience to most other premium phones, yet with a greatly reduced asking price. Sure, you don’t get any jazzy HDR visuals or a ridiculously sharp Quad HD screen - and most users won’t even notice. They’ll be too content with the slick software, lovable design, smooth performance and dependable battery life.

Archive.org versionAs I mentioned at the outset, the Honor 9 is a no frills smartphone, delivering a solid baseline across the board at a price point that most can manage. It doesn’t add anything brand new to the mix, just improves on a winning formula from years past, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Model: The Honor 9 is an affordable smartphone with decent hardware specifications. Honor has managed to keep the price low on its newest device. In fact, it’s up to half the price of flagships from the likes of Samsung and Apple. The Honor 9 has a glass body with a shiny finish. It’s reflective, but not like a mirror; instead it diffracts light at various angles to create a great effect that catches the eye immediately. At a time when many phones struggle to stand out, this is a major selling point. Color choices are limited to Glacier Grey, Midnight Black or Sapphire Blue. The front of the phone is much less thrilling, but there’s a fingerprint sensor at the bottom of the display, which works particularly well. This is an easy-to-hold phone; it’s not a large device, and it has curved edges on the back that allow it to sit comfortably in the palm of a hand. It’s similar to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge on the rear, as it feels like it’s molded to the shape of the hand. The Honor 9 comes in at 147.3 x 70.9 x 7.45 mm and only weighs 155 g, which means it’s easy to slip into a pocket and you need not worry about feeling weighed down by the phone. Another way in which the Honor 9 differs from the flagship competition is that it features a smaller screen. When most rivals are upping the screen size to just below six inch, the Honor 9 features a 5.15-inch display with a 1080p resolution. That’s one of the ways Honor has made this a phone that sits easily in the hand, and it’s a Full HD panel that offers a high resolution. Some will be disappointed it doesn’t have a QHD resolution, but sticking with Full HD contributes to better battery life.
On the rear of the Honor 9 sits the dual-lens rear camera, which features a 20 MP sensor working in tandem with a 12 MP shooter. The 20 MP sensor is monochrome, which means it only shoots in black and white. The 12 MP sensor is RGB, so it takes color images. The phone can take photos using both sensors and combine the images. The 20 MP black and white sensor is used to capture more detail in your images, and this is a system Honor has used on the Honor 8 and various Huawei phones too. Performance on the Honor 9 is at the top end of the range. The phone does not stutter or slow down at any stage, and that’s likely thanks to the new and improved HiSilicon Kirin 960 system-on-a-chip that’s made by Huawei. The Honor 9 features a slightly larger battery than the Honor 8, with a 3,200 mAh cell upgraded from the 3,000 mAh cell on last year’s device. There isn’t any innovative charging technology here, but there is Honor’s fast charging, so the user will be able to charge your phone from zero to 100% in around two hours. The Honor 9 is running Android 7 Nougat with Huawei’s own Emotion UI 5.1 running on top of it. Honor has included a detailed settings list to give a lot of options for customizing the phone. The drop-down on the home screen displays a variety of options, and the user can even switch out the ones that they don’t want.
