How Apple's AirPods helped recover a stolen Ferrari 812 GTS worth over half a million dollars
A stolen Ferrari worth $575,000 was tracked down and recovered by the Waterbury Police Department, thanks to a surprisingly simple solution: a pair of AirPods (the Pro 2 version is currently $199 on Amazon) left inside the car. After the luxury vehicle was taken from Greenwich, the car's owner was able to track their AirPods using Apple's Find My feature, leading the Waterbury Auto Theft Task Force to a gas station on South Main Street.
When police approached, the suspect fled, abandoning not only the Ferrari but, hilariously, also his iPhone. This allowed police to identify the suspect as Dion Schontten, a 22-year-old from Waterbury, who was later arrested and charged with larceny of a motor vehicle.
The case is a prime example of how everyday pieces of technology (and small mistakes, like leaving your $150 AirPods behind in your car), can assist in solving high-profile thefts. Although, please note that the AirPods model wasn't disclosed, so that price is just a speculation. An AirTag could've served a similar purpose, but the thief - who had an iPhone - could've been alerted regarding the same and the consequences may have been different. Locals were also expressing their frustration over the crime, with one of them urging the offender to "go buy yourself a car" instead.
