Foldable smartphones such the Honor Magic Vs are definitely chic and fascinating. But there are also problems.
Honor is bringing its foldable smartphone to Europe - and at a fair price. Nevertheless, it turns out that foldable smartphones still have to contend with certain limitations. Read on for a summary of our review findings.

We had to wait a long time before anyone other than Samsung dared to launch a foldable smartphone in Europe. The Honor Magic Vs is not the first competitor for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, but it is certainly the most promising, as the Chinese are making a very fair offer at EUR 1,599 for the market launch.

It looks fancy, Honor's Foldable, with glass on the back and various metal alloys in the frame, which are intended to bring down the smartphone's overall weight. The hinge has also been streamlined, allowing Honor to install a fairly strong 5,000 mAh battery and still remain on par with other foldables in terms of weight.

The runtimes of the Honor Magic Vs are suitable for everyday use, but still lag behind conventional smartphones.

The displays can be very bright if desired and both offer AMOLED technology. The external screen in 21:9 format is quite slim and delivers very clear picture quality. Inside, there is an almost square 7.9-inch display, so a foldable tablet for your pocket, so to speak. However, the format is suboptimal for 16:9 videos, so films and videos appear larger than on conventional smartphones. On the other hand, the screen is great for working with documents or several apps at the same time.

The clearly visible and noticeable crease on the inner screen is annoying, and there is still no optimal solution here.

The Honor Magic Vs also heats up considerably under load, meaning that the SoC becomes subject to significant throttling. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is unable to fully exploit its potential in the Honor Magic Vs, even under normal conditions. This may be due to the not fully-ripened software of our test device.

The Honor Magic Vs is scheduled for launch in the second quarter of 2023. Those wanting to find out whether the foldable smartphone could be something for them should take a closer look at our detailed review of the Honor Magic Vs, complete with numerous charts, comparisons and a final rating.
