Halide has been one of the more popular camera apps for the Apple iPhone for years, as the app is specifically aimed at users who are not satisfied with the photos from Apple’s stock camera app. Lux Camera has now released a preview version of Halide Mark III and published a blog post that explains the new features and the advantages compared to the iPhone’s native camera app.
Halide Mark III does not use filters as known from other apps. Instead of editing captured photos, Halide’s so-called "looks" are intended to replace the entire image processing algorithm. There are currently three algorithms to choose from. First is the iPhone’s standard algorithm. In this mode, Halide acts as a replacement for Apple’s app with a few additional options for adjustments.
Second is "Process Zero II", which reduces image processing to a minimum in order to produce a more natural photo. Process Zero II now also supports HDR and RAW captures. Third, Halide Mark III offers a black-and-white mode that’s called "Chroma Noir". This look is apparently based on an entirely new image processing pipeline with a particular emphasis on reproducing light as it would have appeared on analog film.
Price and availability
Halide Mark III is free for all users of Halide Mark II, and a preview version is now available in the app. Halide is available in the App Store either as a subscription for $19.99 per year or as a one-time purchase for $59.
