It's almost guaranteed that HTC is hard at work on a successor to the Vive headset. While official details have yet to be made public, current rumors point to new Vive 2 prototypes at next year's CES 2017.
According to DigiTimes, the Taiwanese manufacturer will unveil the Vive 2 early and, if initial specifications prove to be true, it will be a major leap in both comfort and technology. The next Vive will supposedly have a refresh rate of 120 Hz and carry 4K displays with a wireless connection as standard. In comparison, the current Vive headset is limited to 90 Hz and a native 2160 x 1200 resolution with only optional wireless features. It's unknown if the 4K display would be for each eye or be split into lower resolutions. Nonetheless, a 4K VR headset would almost surely bump up the minimum PC requirements to run the Vive smoothly.
HTC has already dropped the price of Vive by 10 percent in the Chinese market whereas the full set still retails for 900 Euros in most European shops before discounts and special deals. The manufacturer is expected to announce a host of new products come January 12 following the week of CES.
