Reviews for the HTC U Play

Play nice. HTC's U Play is a mid-range smartphone with a very nice casing and some highlights: for example, HTC installs a personal assistant called Sense Companion. But is the U Play's everyday suitability also convincing?
76% HTC U Play Review

HTC u play is a perfect and easy to handle LTE enabled device with 64GB ROM and 4GB RAM. The main disadvantage of u play is that it doesn’t have audio jack. Camera has shown us brilliant results while we were expecting much better battery power than this 2500 mAh. The device has very light weight but the price is little expensive which can low-down its market.

HTC U Ultra and U Play UK news, release date and hands-on impressions
Source: Alphr English
There are significant differences between the two phones under the hood as well. Where the Ultra gets a 2.15GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, the Play is equipped with a MediaTek Helio P10 processor, and it’s only available in 32G and 64GB flavours. Both phones have microSD slots for storage expansion up to a theoretical 2TB.

HTC U Play Review – Reinventing Premium Compact Phone Experience?

HTC U Play is overall a decent experience for anyone who prefers a high-end compact phone experience, however, the price that HTC is asking for sounds very steep.

It's hard to figure out who HTC was aiming this phone at – it's a decent mid-ranger, but there's better out there for the same price or less. It's not bad by any means, but like HTC's terrible puns, it's probably not going to delight U.

The HTC U Play is a neat little device with striking looks and smooth all-round performance. It has a good display, the cameras are very capable, and battery life is not too shabby for such a small body. The phone will be going on sale in the second week of April, according to HTC. We weren't able to get any definitive timeline for the rollout of an Android Nougat update, but it should be in the works.

The HTC U Play offers a very pleasant design to look and hold, a simple but functional interface, and decent picture and video capture abilities. It has a steep hill to climb against its direct competitors like the Galaxy A5 (2017), Moto G5 Plus, or the honor 8, though.

HTC U Play Review: Does the premium brand legacy deliver?
Source: The Mobile Indian English
HTC U Play is certainly a new approach from HTC in the smartphone space. The U Play does bank heavily on the new aesthetics and the software coupled with a decent camera. However, a MediaTek Helio P10 in a smartphone priced at Rs 39,990 will raise a lot of eyebrows. As is the case with every other HTC device, the U Play might have stretched the price too high.

The HTC U Play is a good phone that's let down on three counts. Its camera is often far too laggy, some games don’t run that well, and the battery life isn’t good enough. Some won't like HTC's decision to kill the headphone jack, either. While the rest of the handset is solid – particularly its build and look – these issues are enough to make the phone a tough sell at £400.

HTC U Play highlights the fact that compact premium devices still exist in the smartphone industry today. However, while the device does come with a premium design and somewhat premium specifications, the premium price along with it is surely a gamble here from HTC. Priced at Rs 39,990, HTC U Play seems to be a decent device overall, but we are not so sure if it can justify the price.

This is a phone that looks and feels expensive enough for its £400 price, but the closer you get, more and more of the little things you notice chip away at its appeal. Top-end games don’t run as well as they should, the camera is a lag-fest at times, and you have to be pretty careful to get through the day without needing to plug in.

Hands-on with the HTC U Play and U Ultra: I am confUsed
Source: Android Police English
HTC's 2017 strategy so far appears to be "get some phones out the door before everyone manages to steal the spotlight from us." That's not reassuring, and neither of the products they've unveiled seem a resounding vindication of that approach. We'll have to wait for a review to really get our opinions firm, but I can't say I'm optimistic.

Source: CNet English
The HTC U Play is the smaller than the new HTC U Ultra, but we wouldn't call it the runt. It's meant to be a more affordable version of HTC's new line of phones that use AI, or artificial intelligence, software to try giving you a more streamlined experience.

Hands on: HTC U Ultra and U Play, the new HTC flagship smartphones
Source: KL Gadget Guy English
As much as I love the new HTC U smartphones, I am still a little disappointed and have hoped for more, apart from being the first smartphone to have AI, which is still a untested feature, HTC has made just another new flagship smartphone that probably isn’t going to WOW the smartphone industry like it did with the One M7. HTC says the U Ultra and Play are just the very beginning of what they have to offer, and there will be more exciting models to come later this year. I certainly can’t wait to see what HTC has to offer, especially the rumoured Vive capable smartphone, the company really needs to shine beyond just making beautiful smartphones, and I can’t wait to perform a full review on the U Ultra and U Play.

Source: Techradar English
It’s tough to say whether this is an impressive phone, as without a price there’s no baseline to compare it against. Make it cheap and this is a beautifully-designed handset with a lot of spec for not much money; but give it a high RRP and it’ll just fade into the background among the hundreds of other mid-range phones out there.

Comment

Model: The HTC U Play is part of an HTC's new 2017 family of phones. The overall design of the handset is one of the HTC U Play’s key appeals. It is made of metal and glass but has a smoother, more rounded shape. HTC calls it “liquid surface” design. The curvy glass back distorts reflections in quite a liquid-like fashion. The off-white version of the smartphone also has a pinkish, almost pearlescent tint to it, which makes it much funkier-looking than the average white phone. The HTC U Play is also available in pink, black, and blue. To protect the 5.2-inch 1080p Super LCD display, the HTC U Play uses the latest Gorilla Glass 5. It can survive a fall onto a hard surface from a pretty lofty 1.6 m 80% of the time, where Gorilla Glass 4 is only intended to handle 1 m falls. The HTC U Play’s screen has a light texture of diagonal lines across it. As for hardware specification, the HTC U Play has a MediaTek Helio P10 processor and a solid 3 GB of RAM. Flicking around the interface and diving into apps most people use day-to-day such as Facebook and Chrome feel pretty smooth. However, the HTC U Play runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow rather than the latest 7.0 Nougat version. That means the smartphone has Android’s older, simpler notifications system, and no full dual-app multitasking.

The HTC U Play has a 16 MP camera on the front and a 16 MP camera on the back. Thanks to optical image stabilisation and HDR mode, night shots with this smartphone still display plenty of detail. There is an extra mode worth a mention which is Zoe. It is a mode that takes a snippet of video whenever the user takes a photo. Also, the front camera is a great selfie camera capable of producing natural-looking photos. For the battery, the HTC U Play has a 2,500 mAh battery. It does not have a quick charging feature since it uses a standard higher-power 2A charger. This could be less convenient if users intend to charge the device for a short period of time. The HTC U Play comes with voice recognition built-in. So it’s able to recognise the voice and respond to unlock the smartphone, take or reject incoming calls, snooze or dismiss an alarm, send messages and even begin hands-free navigation. Like the HTC U Ultra, the smartphone comes with an extra feature called the HTC Sense Companion. It is a personal companion who is always learning from the user to offer relevant assistance based on his or her needs. The HTC U Play is another very good phone in the mid range section. It will be suitable for most users who don’t need most of the fancy features a flagship has to offer.

ARM Mali-T860 MP2: Dual-Core version of the Mali-T860 graphics card from ARM for mostly Android based smartphones and tablets. E.g. in the Mediatek Helio P10 clocked at 700 MHz and produced in 28nm. 5.2":

This display is quite big for a smartphone but frequently used for smartphones.

Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
0.145 kg:

Only few smartphones are more lightweight than this.

HTC:

High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC) is a Taiwanese manufacturer of mobile phones and other electronic products. In 2012, HTC stopped producing tablets under their own name. In 2012-2013, they faced heavy sales declines. Since then, the company is medium-sized in the smartphone sector. There are numerous reviews on HTC Smartphones (as of 2016).
