I admit to being a bit skeptical of the potential for the ZBook to function as a mobile workstation while fitting into an Ultrabook form factor. While there are certainly some compromises made to get there – the use of a dual-core ULV CPU being the biggest compromise – depending on your needs the ZBook 14 could be exactly what you're after.

Source: Notebooks.com English Archive.org version
The Zbook 14 is a very nice piece of equipment for those who need the power of a workstation without being tied down to the office. Not just for corporate 3D rendering work, its specs allow this Ultrabook to function very well for basic PC gaming, and with its great screen and speakers it makes a strong media device too.

HP's ZBook 14 is an Ultrabook that's also a mobile workstation. It weighs just under 2kg, yet it offers processing power that can be used to run design and modelling applications such as 3ds Max. Basically, it's the type of Ultrabook to go for if you want something mobile that will also help you get your work done while on the road. It's strong and has plenty of useful ports, but its keyboard could be a little better.

The HP ZBook 14 neither turns the world of business computing upside down nor does it bring anything relatively new to the table. When your primary concern is an ultrabook that provides the tools you need to get your job done quickly and securely, none of that matters. HP knows this, and that philosophy drives this laptop through and through. This ultrabook is a fantastically-equipped, 14-inch workhorse at its most expensive, but is easily outshadowed by larger, shinier and cheaper competitors in some regards. If effective, simple security, a pro-grade GPU and easy access are concerns for you, an entry level or mid-range HP ZBook 14 will serve you well.

The sleek HP ZBook 14 isn't just a powerful mobile workstation; it can also serve as a very capable multimedia laptop during your downtime. Its keyboard is comfortable enough to use during long workdays, and the machine's MIL-STD 810G certification means it can stand up to the bumps and bruises of everyday life.

If you're looking for a nicely priced full Windows 7 mobile workstation and value portability, the HP ZBook 14 should be at the top of your list. It has the clear and glare-free studio-ready display that you'd expect from a professional workstation, with the portability and battery life you'd expect from an ultrabook. IT serviceability is a big plus, especially if you have time-sensitive users who need to get back to work right now, even if they put a prop sword through the screen accidentally. Any director, manager, or vice president in the entertainment or engineering industries will be quite happy with the ZBook 14, especially if they travel.

Slim, fast, perfect? HP slimmed down its 14-inch mobile workstation this year and focused on frugal components. We tested if the device can meet the high performance requirements of the customers.

HP ZBook 14 G2

The HP ZBook 14 G2 is a portable and feature packed mobile workstation. The laptop has a traditional design with an all-black setup found on a typical business device. The lid looks premium with a combination of textured area around a brush metal piece with the HP logo in the middle. The HP ZBook 14 G2 is HP's thinnest and lightest ZBook workstation ultrabook and makes for a perfect setup for on-the-go power users. Like most professional laptops for work, the HP ZBook 14 G2 can be configured and customised depending on the setup needed. There are several OS options ranging from Ubuntu to Windows 8.1 64 bit. Hardware can be selected from Intel i5 processors to the more powerful Intel i7 family with the Intel i7-5600U being top of the range. The RAM can be maxed out at 16 GB and the HP ZBook 14 G2 comes with an AMD FirePro M4150 dedicated GPU as an added feature. The workstation also has several storage options with the more traditional HDD to a high-speed 256GB HP Z Turbo Drive SSD. Other standard features include three USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.0 charging port, a DisplayPort, a docking connector, a VGA out and a secondary battery connector. The keyboard is spill-resistant and the laptop comes with a Pointstick. Battery life is superb with a 3-cell Li-Ion pack enabling up to 15 hours of usage.

The HP ZBook 14 excels with a powerful graphics chip and it’s more versatile than many other ultra-portable laptops with a wide selection of ports and easy interior access. The high price of the ZBook will make it untenable for some businesses, especially when rival machines have comparable performance and for far less.

The ZBook 14 G2’s other positive attributes include its high quality construction, excellent upgrade options, cool and quiet operation and standard three-year warranty which also covers the battery. The keyboard feels less than perfect to the touch and that is this notebook’s one notable con which detracts from the ownership experience. However, the keyboard is still plenty functional thanks to its desktop-like layout and full-sized keys.

The Zbook is a reasonable machine in most departments and it’s got the advantage of great chassis versatility and a discrete workstation GPU, but Lenovo’s rival is lighter, slimmer, has better ergonomics, a sharper screen and improved battery life. HP’s workstation laptop isn’t bad, but the Carbon X1 is a better buy unless you need that FirePro GPU.

Overall, while it's clearly not intended to be a gaming laptop, the ZBook is a well-built mobile platform for professionals who need to review or work with the datasets created by colleagues on desktop workstations. For a sub-four-pound system, it's surprisingly durable as well as surprisingly capable in applications intended for professional design and 3D modeling chores, complete with specialized drivers and ISV certifications.

HP ZBook 14u G4

The HP ZBook 14u G4 is a value-option mobile workstation in HP's ZBook lineup. It delivers an extraordinary level of power and graphics capability in a remarkably compact design. The laptop offers a fairly powerful AMD FirePro graphics card and limited ISV certifications for semi-intensive tasks. With many workstations being put to use on assembly lines, in chemical plants, and at outdoor work sites, the ZBook 14u G4 is built with a work-ready level of ruggedness. The ZBook has passed several MIL-SPEC ruggedness tests for everything from extreme temperatures to operability in dusty environments. It has even been tested for an explosive atmosphere, in which the air itself may be filled with flammable substances and a stray spark would have disastrous consequences. At 1.63 kg (3.6 pounds) and measuring 33.78 x 23.62 x 2.21 cm (13.3 x 9.3 x 0.87 inch), the HP ZBook 14u G4 is lighter (yet thicker) than Ultrabook-style mobile workstations like the Dell Precision 5520 (2 kg/4.4 pounds, 1.78 cm/0.7 inch thick) and HP ZBook Studio G4 (2,22 kg/4.9 pounds, 1.78 cm/0.7 inch thick). The ZBook 14u G4 has a healthy selection of ports and features. On the left side of the laptop, a user will find an integrated Smart Card reader, a USB 3.0 port with power for charging devices and a VGA video output. On the right side of the machine is a second USB 3.0 port, a USB 3.1 USB Type-C port, a compact gigabit Ethernet port and DisplayPort for connecting an external monitor. It also boasts a built-in media-card reader, a combination headphone and microphone jack, and a side-docking connector. The ZBook 14u G4 is compatible with the docking hardware used in previous editions of the portable workstation. Other built-in features include a fingerprint sensor for secure login, near-field communications or NFC, and optional mobile broadband. A built-in lock slot lets user physically secure the laptop, and other built-in security features, like vPro management and HP's SureStart Gen 3 BIOS-level protection help user feel confident that their data is equally locked down. As a mobile workstation, it has workstation-class power with 3D graphics, the latest Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, up to 32 GB RAM and 2 TB of storage. Armed with an AMD FirePro W4190M with 2 GB of dedicated VRAM, it is able to run moderate graphic demanding software. The ZBook 14u G4 will more or less get through a workday without forcing to use the charger, lasting about 8 hours under moderate usage on Wi-Fi. In order to offer better portability and reduce the time users spend tethered to a wall socket, the ZBook 14u G4 has HP's Fast Charge technology. This brings an empty battery up to 50 percent charge in 30 minutes. The HP ZBook 14u G4 is a decent workstation for the heavy users. It also has some neat features to attract workstation users. It might not look as futuristic as other workstations but what’s inside is more important. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

79% HP ZBook 14u G4 Mobile Workstation review: Portable and robust, but performance disappoints
Source: Zdnet.com English Archive.org version
HP's 14-inch ZBook 14u G4 is sturdily built, relatively thin and light for a mobile workstation, and provides plenty of connections and configuration options. However, we were disappointed with the performance -- particularly from the discrete GPU -- from this entry-level mobile workstation.

The HP ZBook 14u G4 has a place in the market, especially for those who need to do things like access complex CAD files on the go, or for engineers or content professionals who are on their feet or on location for much of the day. Certain classes of technically minded students will also find the machine attractive, both for its durable build quality and its pricing. You can get into a FirePro workstation-class graphics chip for under a grand here in the base model, although in most other respects, the rest of the machine at that price amounts to, essentially, a well-built midrange mainstream laptop.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

AMD FirePro M4100: Professional workstation graphics card based on the GCN architecture with GDDR5 graphics memory and certified drivers.

AMD FirePro W4190M: Professional lower-mid-range workstation graphics card which is based on the same Mars chip as the Radeon HD 8790M and FirePro W4170M.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4600U:

A Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 2.1 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.3 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.

5600U: Broadwell-based ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5500 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

Intel Kaby Lake:

i7-7500U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.7 to 3.5 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process.

i7-7600U: Kaby-Lake based SoC with two CPU cores clocked at 2.8 to 3.9 GHz, HyperThreading and manufactured with an improved 14nm process. Integrates a HD Graphics 620 clocked at 300 - 1150 MHz and is manufactured in an improved 14nm process.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
