The HP Spectre Folio was unveiled on the same week as the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 where the OEM had promised two colors options (Bordeaux Burgundy or Cognac Brown) and two touchscreen options (FHD or 4K UHD). When the leather-clad convertible finally launched a few weeks later, however, only the FHD Cognac Brown option was available for purchase. HP has confirmed at CES 2019 that it will finally be selling the missing configurations later this month.
Surfaces and texture remain identical to the Cognac Brown option as one would expect. If we had to choose, the darker color scheme of Cognac Brown would likely stand the test of time better than the new tan-colored keys. Furthermore, HP says that battery life will be a bit shorter on the 4K UHD SKU and so users will be making a trade-off for that higher resolution.
Based on our experience with FHD and 4K UHD display options, the 4K UHD panel will likely also exhibit different response times, contrast ratios, and color coverage as the FHD panel.
The Bordeaux Burgundy Spectre Folio will carry no price premium over the existing Cognac Brown configuration. As such, the starting price of $1300 will still net users a Core i5-8200Y CPU with 8 GB of soldered LPDDR3-1866 RAM, 256 GB SSD, and a HP active pen.
