If bigger is better, then the HP Pavilion dv7 is certainly that, given what we've seen and experienced during our hands-on testing of the unit. In fact, the size helps to seal the deal for the dv7; it's an entertainment unit and it's capable of some level of gaming but it actually manages to look and feel pretty thin and slim in spite of that. Given its ample real estate, HP has made good use of the space with a decent keyboard layout, with generous connectivity options that doesn't feel cluttered. If you're a fan of glossy reflective surfaces, then you'll love the shiny look of the current HP Pavilion series.

The HP Pavilion dv7 is the way to go for shoppers who want speed, lots of features, and a good-looking design. It trounces the Dell Studio 17 in both design and performance. The 16.4-inch Sony VAIO VGN-FW198U/H may be more portable, but it’s $200 more and lacks the dv7’s graphics muscle. If portability isn’t as big an issue, but multimedia is, you’ll be happy with this big-screen machine.

Big Brother. The Pavilion dv7-1050eg and the dv7-1045eg by HP are equipped with a big 17" wide screen, a Blu-Ray ROM drive, a playable middle-class graphics card, and of course it has the new liquid metallic design. This article covers whether this notebook is a good bundle.

We recommend the eye-catching, media-friendly HP Pavilion dv7-1025nr desktop replacement for students who want a laptop that doubles as an entertainment center. Gateway, however, has a slightly cheaper 17-inch model that's better suited to gamers.

Overall, the Pavilion dv7-1000ea offers good looks, brilliant ergonomics, loads of connectivity, decent specifications and speakers and even above average battery life for a relatively small outlay. This alone would normally garner it a recommendation, unfortunately HP hasn't conquered the main weakness of its Pavilion range since like its 15.4in bedfellow its display lacks brightness and suffers from prohibitively poor viewing angles. If you can live with this flaw it's still an excellent piece of kit, but it's worth seeking out a demo unit before taking the plunge.

HP's ‘The Computer is Personal Again' campaign keeps producing some stunning notebooks, and on looks alone the Pavillion dv7-1000ea certainly stands out from the crowd. Add in Intel's latest mobile technology and a Blu-ray drive, plus a strong price tag, and it becomes even more attractive.

A flawless mix of style, usability and features from this great media centre. HP is one the world's largest laptop manufacturers, with a comprehensive range of machines available. Its Pavilion brand targets the consumer market, and the dv7-1004ea (£831 inc. VAT) is a high powered and affordable media and gaming laptop that excels on many levels. Due to its large 17-inch screen, the chassis weighs 3.6kg. It is one of the biggest and heaviest laptops around, and a true desktop replacement. Its 232-minute battery life is excellent, however, so you can easily work on the move if the weight doesn't put you off. The flawless mix of style, performance and features make the HP Pavilion dv7- 1004ea an excellent entry-level media centre. The reflective screen is not ideal in bright conditions, but there are few better laptops available at this price.

HP's Pavilion dv line of multimedia laptops, available in 14-, 15-, and 17-inch versions, are all attractive systems aimed at mainstream consumers with a heavy diet of videos, music, and other forms of media. To this end, they share features such as Altec Lansing speakers, HDMI outputs, and touch-sensitive media control buttons, along with mirror-finish accents. HP's attractive, multimedia-friendly Pavilion dv7-1245dx is an inexpensive choice for a desktop replacement, as long as you don't need too much horsepower under the hood.

A stunning design and great usability, but flawed by poor performance. HP's Pavilion laptop range provides some of the best usability and most stylish designs on the market. The Pavilion dv7-1107ea is a stunning entry-level media centre, but performance falls massively short of expectations. Although the stunning design and great usability of the Pavilion dv7-1107ea make it well worth a look, its flawed performance makes it hard to fully recommend. If you're seeking a high-powered media centre, then the Samsung R710 is a much better choice.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Successor of the 8600M GT and because of the smaller 65nm production process the card is higher clocked (and therefore faster) with the same current consumption.Furthermore, it features an improved video processor (VP3) and HybridPower to save current (in conjunction with the 9100M G).
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS: Slower clocked 9600M GT and therefore a bit slower and cooler. In conjunction with an 9100M the 9600M GS is able to use HybridPower to save current.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450: Successor of the HD 2400 produced in 55nm (therefore with a faster clockspeed) and with DirectX 10.1 support. Avivo HD video support enables the gpu to decode HD videos. For modest casual gamers suited (demanding games run only in very low settings).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T9400:
The T9400 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo P9500 with a higher TDP of 35 Watt.
P7350:
Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
P8400:
Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).
P7450: Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
P8600:
Fast but still not overpriced dual core CPU. For most games and multimedia applications sufficient and due to the 25W TDP even for smaller notebooks useable.
AMD Turion X2: The Turion X2 (without 64) is based on the Turion X2 Ultra, but has only 1024 MB L2 Cache and is therefore slower (performance compareable to the old Turion 64 X2). Because of new parts from the K10 architecture, the CPU should be more energy efficient.
RM-72:
Griffin based entry-level dual core processor. The cores are still based on the old K8 architecture (memory controller is newer).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
3.5 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
3.6 kg:
Only a few laptops are in this weight class because the mobility is rather limited due to the high weight.
77.65%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
» Further information can be found in our Notebook Purchase Guide.
