The HP does has the edge in terms of the battery life however – in our light-use test the HP lasted 3hrs and 23mins, a full hour longer Asus – however the HP we saw lacks in both 3D and 2D performance. But, if outright performance and gaming don’t matter to you, and the gaudy, glitzy styling suits, then the HP is a perfectly viable alternative.

The HP Pavilion dv5-1011ea is a reasonable machine at a more than affordable price.
The Blu-ray drive will no doubt be the main selling point, but we also found the graphics and performance to be better than we were expecting. Battery life is poor, but if you're looking for a machine to use around the house, this is worth considering.

There's much to like about the HP Pavilion dv5-1011ea and it comes pretty close to being an ideal all-round multimedia machine. Indeed, the only thing that holds it back and precludes it from an award, is the slightly disappointing screen. This doesn't mean you should disregard it completely, its superb design, excellent feature set and reasonable price ensure that, but if you're interested then it's worth taking a look at one in the flesh before settling on it.

HP's Pavilion dv5-1160us is one of the highest end configurations of the 15.4-inch Pavilion dv5 laptop lineup. While the performance is decent for the price range, the big advantage is the large number of peripheral connectors it offers. The included media remote that stores in the ExpressCard slot is also a nice touch. The laptop suffers though with a dedicate graphics processor not well suited to 3D but more towards accelerated video streams.

A stylish multimedia laptop, but everyday performance could be stronger. HP's Pavilion range is aimed at home users, with a mix of stylish, feature-packed laptops available. The Pavilion dv5- 1110em is one such laptop and offers great value for money. Packed with features, the HP Pavilion dv5-1110em may lack the all-out performance of its Intel-based rivals, but it's still a desirable and impressive laptop. That it also includes a Blu-ray drive at such a competitive price is a bonus, helping to offer great value for money.

HP’s Pavilion dv5-1110em is the ideal laptop for the recession, cramming in loads of features at a bargain basement price. Billed as an Entertainment Notebook PC, the dv5 comes with an integrated Blu-ray optical drive - a surprise at this price. At a touch over £500, it’s amazing just how much the Pavilion dv5-1101em has to offer. There are few cheaper machines featuring Blu-ray drives, and it also provides reasonable multimedia performance. Along with the excellent build quality and comfort, it’s easy to recommend this laptop. Only the choice of processor lets it down - we found it slower than equivalent Intel-based machines, and the battery life is also poor. That said, unless you’re going to be carrying out the most processor-intensive tasks, or need a laptop for long-term travel, it’s a price well worth paying.

Basically, the DV5 is a no thrills notebook that desperately tries to be different. In some respects, it manages to stick out from the mass of cheap 15-inchers, but it also has some shortcomings. First of all, the glossy touchpad is pretty uncomfortable to use, and it can be downright annoying. The screen is also a bit disappointing. At 1280x800, it lacks a bit of resolution by today's standards, but that's the least of its problems. It's too glossy, and simply lacks brightness and contrast.

HP's Pavilion dv line of multimedia laptops, available in 14-, 15-, and 17-inch versions, are all attractive systems aimed at mainstream consumers with a heavy diet of videos, music, and other forms of media. To this end, they share features such as Altec Lansing speakers, HDMI outputs, and touch-sensitive media control buttons, along with mirror-finish accents. HP's attractive multimedia-friendly Pavilion dv5-1235dx has a great battery life, but at the cost of having one of the biggest, ugliest battery packs we've seen

The latest version of HP's Pavilion dv5 series moves away from the Intel based processors to the more affordable AMD Turion X2 processors. This does decrease the performance somewhat compared to man other 15.4-inch laptops, but the lower $850 price rage will attract many. The bronze color scheme may attract some and detract others but they really should have reconsidered the keyboard to be easier to see.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Successor of the 8600M GT and because of the smaller 65nm production process the card is higher clocked (and therefore faster) with the same current consumption.Furthermore, it features an improved video processor (VP3) and HybridPower to save current (in conjunction with the 9100M G).
These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.
NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS: Slower clocked 9300M GS and therefore a little bit slower. Supports PureVideo HD (VP3)and Hybrid-SLI (HybridPower and GeForceBoost).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450: Successor of the HD 2400 produced in 55nm (therefore with a faster clockspeed) and with DirectX 10.1 support. Avivo HD video support enables the gpu to decode HD videos. For modest casual gamers suited (demanding games run only in very low settings).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
P7350:
Entry level Core 2 Duo processor with 3 MB Level 2 Cache and due to the 25 Watt TDP also suited for 13" laptops.
T5750:
Entry level dual core processor based on the Merom core without Virtualization support and a low maximum temperature.
T9400:
The T9400 is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and basically a Core 2 Duo P9500 with a higher TDP of 35 Watt.
T5800: Entry level dual core processor based on the Merom core without Virtualization support and a low maximum temperature.
P8600:
Fast but still not overpriced dual core CPU. For most games and multimedia applications sufficient and due to the 25W TDP even for smaller notebooks useable.
T6400: Entry level dual core processor based on the Penryn core with only 2 MB level 2 cache and a low clock speed.
AMD Turion X2 Ultra: The AMD Turion X2 Ultra is part of the Puma platform and a mixture of the old K9 core (form the Turion 64 X2) and some parts of the K10 architecture (memorycontroller, hypertransport, crossbar switch from the Phenom). Because of the increased L2 cache ("Ultra" CPUs) and the improved memory controller, the performance increased a bit. Still a similar clocked Core 2 Duo is noticably faster.
ZM-80:
Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo. The ZM-80 is the slowest CPU of the ZM series and a entry level CPU in 2008.
ZM-82:
Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo.
AMD Turion X2: The Turion X2 (without 64) is based on the Turion X2 Ultra, but has only 1024 MB L2 Cache and is therefore slower (performance compareable to the old Turion 64 X2). Because of new parts from the K10 architecture, the CPU should be more energy efficient.
RM-72:
Griffin based entry-level dual core processor. The cores are still based on the old K8 architecture (memory controller is newer).

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
72.84%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
