X marks the spot. HP has unleashed a beast in the form of the HP Omen X 17. With a high-refresh rate panel, an overclockable Core i7 CPU, and the most powerful mobile GPU currently on the market, does the Omen X 17 have the "X factor" it needs to stand apart from the crowd, or is it just white noise in a highly competitive performance tier?

HP Omen X 17-ap002ng

With the Omen X by HP 17-ap002ng, which was designed for overclocking, users can define their own limits. The HP Omen X 17 is a real battleship, which is mainly due to its weight and dimensions. With dimensions of 425 x 327.2 x 36.4 mm, the device is a real knocker that would rather pass through as a desktop replacement than a portable notebook. This is supported by the weight of around 4.85 kg. It is thinner but heavier than other competitors' devices such as the MSI GT75VR. Thus, the HP Omen X 17 is actually only for players who want to retire their old desktop computer. HP uses a high-quality aluminum housing, whose screen cover is strikingly textured and is illuminated in red during operation. That definitely gets attention at the next LAN party. This is based on the so-called hinge-forward design, whereby the hinges are not flush with the base unit and the notebook still takes up additional space in the area behind the screen. The space behind the top case and the screen is almost exclusively used for cooling. With the Intel Core i7-7820HK processor (2.90 GHz) and factory-overclocked Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card unlocked, the 17-ap002ng remains cool thanks to advanced thermal management so the user can play even the most demanding games without throttling performance. There is a whopping 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a RAID array of two fast PCI Express SSDs. The display measures 17.3 inch in diagonal, featuring gamer friendly 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and is characterized by 144 Hz panel as particularly responsive. This means the laptop can handle even the most demanding games. While many manufacturers use a simple chiclet keyboard, HP equips the laptop with mechanical keys that are also lit by an RGB backlight. All buttons have a generous stroke of 2.5 mm and give a very good feedback. The only downside is that the keys are very loud, but they make a real clicking sound. The touchpad is relatively small with dimensions of about 102 x 59 mm, the sliding properties of the plastic surface are still passable but could be better especially the buttons, which give a rather spongy feedback. On the connection side, the HP Omen X 17 has a lot to offer. Connections such as the Ethernet interface or the video outputs are mounted behind the screen. Here, the top model of the Omen series provides a Gigabit Ethernet interface (but without Killer-NIC), an HDMI port and a mini DisplayPort and a USB 3.1 Type-A port. There are also two Type-C ports, both of which can handle the Thunderbolt-3 protocol. The Omen X 17-ap002ng is another highly specced gaming laptop to compete with the big names like Razer and Alienware. Somehow, the need for gaming laptops has increased in recent times and with this now profitable market, HP is definitely staying in it. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

HP Omen X 17-ap007ng

I once wrote that there is a race starting where every manufacturer is trying to release a very compact mobile gaming companion. Well, HP is doing otherwise with Omen X 17 and releases a gaming behemoth. It is a giant in every way, whether it is performance or bulkiness. My way of looking at top level devices nowadays is maybe only around thermal management and maybe multimedia or connectivity. But thermal is the biggest focus mostly, because you have a i7-7820HK processor with GeForce GTX 1080. Both are very powerful and power hungry. So yeah, again there are other devices with similar components already. What distinguishes the Omen X from its competition? And this question alone might make it hard to come up with a purchase decision. Because there is nothing unique about this device. I am not sure, maybe the 120 Hz panel could be considered as a distinctive point, but that’s mostly about it. At least there are 2 USB 3.1 Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 support. Otherwise, I would completely give up on the Omen X. I know I sound negative, but this is not something specific to the Omen X, but for Desktop Replacement laptops nowadays in general. They all are big in size, they almost all come equipped with fastest components. What separates them from each other is again how they cool themselves. The Omen X fails at this point. During heavy 3D load, the device gets warm, but at least it manages to stay under hot area. The idea of overclocking stops right here, due to bad thermal management. Just like every other behemoth, the Omen X is equipped with a comically large power adaptor, so, should you buy it? Okay, the answer totally remains to your preferences. As I said, this device is going to stay on your desk, whatever your choice would be in this segment, they all will high likely stay on desk, unless you want to move around with a very heavy laptop that may last only about a couple hours on battery. Therefore what I would advise to the possible buyer is go out, check all the devices and maybe compare the pricing. The competition is really though here. MSI, Asus, Acer, Lenovo… They all have different models in this segment, they all have really very similar specs, so it is rather about your taste in design and looks than performance itself. If I had the opportunity to buy this device, I would definitely buy it. But if this review would have been about an Asus Strix ROG device, I would still say the same. Overall, the HP Omen X 17 series is a success, it provides the performance it promises. But it does not provide any uniqueness that the competition cannot provide. HP Omen X 17-ap000nf

The HP Omen X 17-ap000nf is a gaming laptop that features high-performance hardware and top-notch build quality. It falls under the HP’s added new massive gaming collection, the Omen X Laptop. The Omen X 17 is a 17.3-inch notebook equipped with a mechanical keyboard, a rather rare item in the world of notebook PC gamers. The case of this 17.3-inch laptop is characterized by aggressive lines and a metal finish. The textured back panel of the display housing gives a nice flair that works with the RGB-backlit logo to make the device pop. The only downside is that the black semi-gloss finish across the brushed metal surfaces only looks nice until it is touched. Fingerprints and smudges stick to the body like glue and require effort to remove. When the laptop is turned on, the entire backlighting of the mechanical keyboard goes into action, illuminating the internal tray with a thousand lights. All colors and areas are customizable via the Omen Command Center. The keyboard temperature remains almost unchanged when the system is under load. The palm rests also stay nice and cool while gaming. The 1,920 x 1,080 IPS display is another focal point of the Omen X 17, primarily due to its 120 Hz refresh rate. The screen is also reasonably bright at about 330 nits, although the bottom left corner is a bit dimmer than the rest of the panel. This is only noticeable on dark screens and isn't distracting during normal use. Since it is an IPS panel, viewing angles are good. As for hardware specification, the Omen X 17 has a solid seventh generation Intel Core i7, the 7820HK, one of the most powerful of its generation, associated with 16 GB of DDR4 (expandable). Its operating frequency of up to 3.9 GHz in Turbo mode (2.9 GHz base) is ample to run all programs. The Omen X 17 has a GTX 1070 graphics processor. Despite its two years of existence, it still holds the road when it comes to running the games on the 17.3-inch screen. HP places a 256 GB PCIe SSD (Samsung brand) SSD on the motherboard. The 99 Wh battery does a respectable job of powering the device for normal use. While most large gaming notebooks have similarly large batteries, the Omen X 17's leaves them in the dust. Even without the benefit of Nvidia's Optimus, the Omen X 17 can last about five and a half hours under normal usage. At the back, the laptop includes the wired network connection, HDMI video outputs, and a mini DisplayPort, and all three USB Type-A ports, and two Type-C (Thunderbolt 3 compatible). On the sides of the device, there are two USB 3.0 jacks (one on each side), an SD card reader, and the usual analog audio jacks. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

The HP Omen X costs a huge premium in India, compared to what it’s retailing for in the US. This very same configuration costs roughly $3,490 (plus taxes), which translates to about Rs. 2,40,000. However in India, you’ll be paying Rs. 3,26,391, which is a big jump. In terms of competition, the Dell Alienware 17 is one of the few 17-inch laptops that comes to mind, with similar core features for around the same price. If you can live without the mechanical keyboard, then the Dell will get you a higher resolution G-Sync display (Quad-HD) along with a decently high 120Hz refresh rate and the company also recently refreshed its gaming line with 8th generation Intel CPUs.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.

In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile: Pascal based laptop graphics card using GDDR5 graphics memory. Should offer a similar performance to the deskto GTX 1080. However, there is also a more power efficient "Max-Q" version that performs worse than the normal GTX1080 and is used in thin and light laptops.

Intel Kaby Lake:

i7-7820HK: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture running at 2.9 - 3.9 GHz. It is the second fastest model of the consumer H-series in the beginning of 2017. The chip also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU clocked at 350 - 1100 MHz and is manufactured in a 14 nm process (improved compared to Skylake). Compared to the Core i7-7820HQ, the 7820HK lacks business features like vPro or TXT support.

4.4 kg:

A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
