For us, as we hinted before, it comes down to this being Sure View 1.0—we wish the screen looked better, at least when the privacy feature's deactivated, so we'll wait for HP's and 3M's next generation. But if your company's travel agent is forever booking you into middle seats, you'll want to check the EliteBook out.

The Elitebook 1040 G4 is a solidly built 14-inch laptop that should prove a capable, if potentially expensive, workhorse. There are 21 off-the-page configurations available at the time of writing, so it's a shame none currently sport an 8th generation Intel Core processor. Still, battery life is excellent, you get four USB ports (two USB 3.1, two USB-C/Thunderbolt) and the Privacy Screen is likely to prove useful for mobile professionals.

To summarize, from our time with the HP EliteBook 1040 G9, we learned that it is a very good business notebook. It has a ton of security features, as well as optional 5G support. This means you can work from pretty much anywhere in the world. This is also possible thanks to the decent battery life – we got about 14 hours of Web browsing or 10 hours of video playback on a single charge. It features a 65W USB Type-C power adapter. Provided you’re not with an iPhone, you can charge at least two of your mobile devices with one charger (one at a time). In addition, the machine provides two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.0 connector, two regularly-sized USBs, and a Smart Card reader. HP EliteBook 1040 G9’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a very good contrast ratio. It covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut, which results in a fairly attractive image to look at.

The EliteBook 1040 G10 is the business flagship from HP and a direct competitor to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon from Lenovo. However, the current Core i5 processor from Intel doesn't offer a lot of performance, and the display of our test unit doesn't reach the values specified by the manufacturer.

Power, efficiency, sleekness, and plenty of security measures—these are the hallmarks of the HP EliteBook 1040 G11. Designed for mobile professionals or anyone looking for an ultraportable laptop that goes hard on security, the G11 has something for everyone. Its slim, lightweight chassis is equal parts elegant and durable; its Intel CPU is more than capable of handling heavy-duty productivity tasks; and the anti-glare display and quad speaker system are sprinkles on an already stacked cake serving up unexpected levels of vibrancy and volume. It's no secret that Lenovo's legendary ThinkPad X1 Carbon is our favorite business notebook, but the HP's exemplary construction and feature set, plus the deep protection of Wolf Security, make it a very viable alternative.

With almost 19.5 hours of battery life and performance that rivals that of Apple’s M3 MacBooks, the HP Elitebook 1040 G11 5G is absolutely worth it. At the time of this review, this is the longest-lasting, non-ARM Windows laptop. At $2,099, it's a pricey laptop, but you get a lot in exchange for that high price tag: zippy performance, a battery that just won’t quit, ports galore, a satisfyingly responsive keyboard, and a super lightweight design that you’ll barely notice in a backpack. That said, it’s not perfect. If you need a laptop with the best speakers, a high-quality webcam, or a more interesting design, this probably isn’t the laptop for you. Instead, take a look at the M3 MacBook Pro.

On the surface, the EliteBook 1040 G11 may seem expensive for what you get. $2,099 for a laptop with a 48W power limit, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and no discrete GPU is pretty pricey. Once again, though, this laptop is intended for enterprise road warriors that require the utmost reliability, durability, connectivity, port options and security, and many of the features that you're paying for with the EliteBook 1040 may not show up on a simple specs sheet. In short, this machine offers a bit more than just the sum of its parts. Because of its specific user target, it's difficult to gauge the machine's value in light of mainstream consumer laptops, but speaking empirically, the performance of the HP EliteBook 1040 G11 is solid and its battery life is outstanding.

The HP Elite x360 1040 G11 is a solid business laptop. It’s got the high performance, the sleek design, and the comfortable keyboard I’d want out of a laptop for work. However, the display and battery life aren’t cutting it. Not to mention that it costs over $2K. Better to be a security risk than flat broke. Try something like the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus, which offers double the battery life as well as a brighter and sharper display. Despite that, if you want all of those unique security features, the HP Elite x360 1040 G11 is a solid choice. (Just wait for a sale.)

This laptop has a specific target market: productivity workers, businesses, and security-conscious users. If you’re a business owner looking to purchase a fleet of secure laptops and can afford the high price tag, this laptop might work for you. It’s sleek and modern, performs well, and has about average battery life for a Windows laptop. It also has AI features if you’re looking to integrate AI into your workflow. If you’re not a business person but just an everyday consumer looking for a sleek laptop, then I’d definitely look at more consumer-targeted laptops, such as the Dell XPS series, the MacBook Air/Pro, or even the new Snapdragon powered PCs.

Business laptops are a different breed, offering more security and management features to accommodate the largest organizations. They also offer a wider range of configuration options and better warranties. HP’s EliteBook 1040 series has long been among the most impressive of these. The 2024 model continues that trend. The redesign is an attractive and well-built thin-and-light 14-inch laptop that can compete with the best out there. And HP’s Wolf Security suite lets you lock it down and manage it with a diverse set of tools. For the right buyer, the EliteBook 1040 is an excellent choice.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
