Released in May 2025, DOOM: The Dark Ages stayed true to the core formula of the series while still introducing fresh ideas. Instead of futuristic arenas, id Software embraced a dark fantasy style with medieval fortresses, towering cathedrals, and twisted hellscapes. The core remains the same: aggressive, uncompromising shooter action – though this time with a slightly slower, more deliberate pace.

The Dark Ages introduces several key gameplay innovations that push the series forward. For the first time, players can use a shield to block incoming projectiles, adding a new layer to the established combat. If you enjoy first-person shooters and have a soft spot for the Doom series, The Dark Ages offers a strong overall package with few major points of criticism. Some players may miss a multiplayer mode, and the newly added dragon segments could offer more challenge, but overall the game has been warmly received. German gaming magazine GameStar awarded it 90 out of 100, writing: “Graphics, sound, gameplay – everything just fits.” On Steam, the game has more than 34,000 reviews with an 88% positive rating. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 83 and a User Score of 8.0.

67% discount on Steam for the first time

DOOM: The Dark Ages normally carries a $70 price tag on Steam. According to SteamDB, discounts had previously capped out at 50%. Until February 15, however, players can purchase the Bethesda Softworks-published title for the first time at a 67% discount, lowering the price to $23.09. The offer may also appeal to Steam Deck owners looking to expand their library, as The Dark Ages is officially marked as “Verified” for Valve’s handheld (available on Amazon at $675).
