Ubisoft suspended an employee last month who openly criticized the company's new return-to-office policy. That situation has now escalated further.

Ubisoft announced several major changes last month, and many of them were not easy for employees to accept. As part of a wider restructuring effort, the company shut down multiple studios and canceled several ongoing projects, including the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake. At the same time, Ubisoft also confirmed a new return-to-office policy, claiming that bringing employees back into physical offices would help improve efficiency.

Not long after the policy was made public, David Michaud-Crop, a team lead at Ubisoft Montreal, openly criticized the company’s return-to-office policy on his personal LinkedIn account. His post questioned the idea that forcing employees back into offices would automatically lead to better efficiency, especially after teams had already proven they could deliver results remotely.

Shortly after his post gained attention, Ubisoft took disciplinary action and gave him a three-day unpaid suspension. And now, the situation has escalated further, as Michaud-Crop has confirmed that he has been fired from Ubisoft.

He shared an update on LinkedIn explaining that his employment was terminated effective immediately. He made it clear that this was not his choice and said he would not go into details about the internal reasons behind the decision. He also mentioned that he plans to take some time to regroup before talking about his next steps.

Following this development, Wccftech reached out to Ubisoft for an official response. Ubisoft replied by stating that employees are allowed to share feedback and opinions, as long as it is done respectfully. According to the company, simply expressing criticism does not lead to termination.

Ubisoft also pointed to its internal Code of Conduct, which outlines expectations for professional behavior. Employees are required to review and sign this code every year. The company explained that when these guidelines are breached, certain disciplinary actions are taken. These can escalate depending on how serious the issue is, how often it happens, and the overall context.
