Google Nest has revealed a new service for its thermostat range. The company hopes that Nest Renew will optimize thermostats for greener energy use through several smart features, including Energy Shift. Nest Renew will be available in the US only for the time being.

Google has announced new features for its Nest thermostats to help customers live more sustainably. The service, called Nest Renew, contains several features, including Energy Shift. Arguably Nest Renew's core feature, Energy Shift automatically shifts energy usage to maximize clean energy consumption from the grid when heating or cooling your home.

Plus, Nest thermostats can adjust themselves to work more efficiently based on the season. Alongside this, your Nest thermostat could save you money by smartly adapting to minimize time-of-use charges your energy provider might enforce.

There will be two service levels available for Nest Renew, a free Basic package available across the continental US and a Premium package costing US$10 (~€9) per month. The latter is only available in some US markets at launch, which Google is yet to specify.

By opting for the Premium service, customers will gain access to Clean Energy Match. Google explains that the feature allows people to support the growth of the renewable energy market by matching their estimated fossil fuel electricity consumption with Renewable Energy Credits from green energy plants in the US.

Nest Renew will be available on the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, the Nest Thermostat E, and the Nest Thermostat. Google will roll out the service first in an invitation-only early preview. You can sign up to join the waiting list at the Nest Renew website.
