Google adds new features for improved sleep with wallpaper dimming in Android 13
Google has released a new version of its Digital Wellbeing app to beta testers, which you can join via the Google Play Store. Bundled with Pixel smartphones, the beta app update provides a look at features that Google plans to introduce with Android 13. For reference, the Android 13 Beta program has now reached Beta 4.1, which should be one of the final beta updates before Google releases a stable update to AOSP and Pixel smartphones.
Although Google has not commented on the changes contained within Digital Wellbeing 1.1.463639936.beta, 9to5Google and Mishaal Rahman have shared screenshots of the new features that they have discovered. Specifically, Google has given the Bedtime mode sub-menu a Material You redesign, simplifying set-up and giving the app a more modern look overall. Also, Digital Wellbeing still offers the option of setting a Bedtime schedule for certain days and not others, for which there are also other customisation options.
Moreover, Google has included a new animation when enabling Bedtime mode manually, beneath which there are options for disabling the mode immediately or pausing it for 30 minutes. Furthermore, Digital Wellbeing can now dim your wallpaper at night when Bedtime mode is active. Theoretically, this setting works in tandem with Bedtime mode's other options to reduce blue light emissions and improve sleep quality. According to 9to5Google, Google has only released the Material You refresh to devices running Android 13 Beta so far. Presumably, Google will push the overhauled Digital Wellbeing app to older versions of Android once Android 13 arrives.
