Gigabyte Sabre 15K-DE022T
These days gaming notebooks tend to bounce between over the top designs and actual take home units with the Gigabyte Sabre 15K falling towards the latter category. While the Gigabyte Sabre 15K is squarely aimed at budget users there is absolutely nothing budget about it when it comes to gaming notebooks. Starting with its design Gigabyte has chosen to go down the slim and subtle design. Its thin matte aluminium chassis sure looks and feels premium to the touch. Spec-wise the Gigabyte Sabre 15K offers some decent hardware with its Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16 GB of RAM and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti graphics unit which should able to handle most games on high settings. Because of Gigabyte’s GPU choice this actually makes the Sabre 15K very affordable. Going along to its display the Sabre 15K is equipped with a FHD IPS panel which allows for a wider viewing angle while still delivering a vibrant viewing experience, it still makes one wonder whether the budget title attached to it holds water since usually manufacturers would resort to choosing a cheaper TN panel instead. Despite it being an IPS panel, sRGB ratings are sort of mediocre at only 55%, which is not to say it’s bad if you don’t do content creation on this notebook. As for the audio department the Sabre 15K sports a standard stereo setup minus a subwoofer which really isnt bad since audio quality remains decent especially with the inclusion of Creative’s Sound Blaster Cinema 3 audio app. In terms of user input Gigabyte has made sure that it is packed with features, starting with the inclusion of a numpad and a software solution called Flexikey which allows macro recording and hotkey configuration. The keyboard is also RGB backlit and with the use of the included Flexikey software users can also adjust its color settings. While the keyboard is loaded with features the included trackpad is pretty generic apart from feeling soft and comfortable but that’s to be expected. Lastly as a special mention Gigabyte has pre-bundled a copy of XSplit Broadcaster and Gamecaster for gamers out there who frequently stream. Overall, Gigabyte was able to balance which features to cut and which features to bolster without taking away from the whole experience which is good considering their experience in the market. With an RRP of $1,899, the Sabre 15 manages to undercut its competition by about $200 for a near identical setup, which is an exciting prospect for a price-conscious market. A battery life of 2 hours and 53 minutes in PCMark 8’s Home battery benchmark, reasonable 86°C max CPU temperatures, acceptable-quality stereo speakers and ample connectivity options means that, at this price, we are at a loss to fault this unit.

The Gigabyte Sabre 15-K is fast in applications and games, and its screen is better than the Dell Inspiron – but it doesn’t offer enough when it comes to ergonomics, storage and battery life to triumph over its key rival. Regardless, it remains a good choice if screen quality is a priority.

Great gaming for under $1000. Gigabyte has introduced one of its best entry-level gaming laptops that start at less than a grand. Still, there are plenty of cut corners on this brand new Sabre series that potential buyers should be aware of.

Gigabyte joins a crowded field of 1080p resolution, GeForce GTX 1060-based gaming laptops with a 15.6-inch model boasting 2mm of keyboard travel and an understated design. Is this the ideal productivity/gaming doubleheader?

The Gigabyte SabrePro 15 delivers an appealing mix of mid-range and higher-end components and manages to offer features we once considered exclusive to pricer units. As a bonus, the SabrePro 15 not only includes faster PCIe SSD storage but also packs an HDD that’s bigger than anything else in the price range.

The Gigabyte SabrePro 15 has a good design, excellent performance for the price and a high-quality screen. Its main draw, though, is that it’s sensibly priced and has a decent warranty. The look isn’t too exciting, battery life is limited and heat management is less than perfect. However, the great performance and good display make it a good-value gaming laptop.

Gigabyte may have been promoting the heck out of its Aorus premium brand of gaming products, but that doesn’t mean it’s forgotten the rest of us. At this year’s Computex, it unveiled the brand new range of Sabre gaming laptops, aiming to deliver affordable gaming laptops for those of us who don’t have thick wallets. The Sabre 17 is the first to come across our testbench, and while it’s great value for a 17-incher, you’re going to have to make compromises if you want to play the latest and greatest. As mentioned, it’s a rather large gaming machine, dominated by the 17.3-inch display. It’s a beautiful IPS panel that is razor sharp despite being just 1920 x 1080p, though only supports the basic 60Hz refresh rate and no sign of G-Synch. Gigabyte has gone for an extremely subtle overall design – it’s basically straight lines and pure black all the way.

The Sabre 15 and Sabre 17 don’t have the killer specs of competing, more expensive gaming notebooks, but they have a lot of potential. If Intel’s Optane storage tech works as hoped, they could be fantastic value for money.

Gigabyte's big 17-inch Sabre starts out with a lot of promise: The combination of a powerful new hexa core processor and a GTX 1060 should give rise to a full-fledged desktop replacement with plenty of gaming power. Can the Sabre 17 live up to its promise? Or will the saber grow dull only halfway there? Our review reveals the answer.
