Garmin is rolling out a new software update once again, this time for the Forerunner 970 and Forerunner 570. At this time, software version 15.09 is still in the beta stage, so participants of the beta program must request it manually via the OTA feature on their respective smartwatch. Beta updates like this latest 15.09 version generally deactivate the ECG feature, which applies to the Forerunner 970 (from $749 on Amazon) in this case.
Garmin lists several bug fixes as well as other changes and improvements that are contained in this new software. The pace indicator, so the time required per mile, should now be more responsive. However, users should know that the current pace is not actually a real-time measurement, as it’s determined based on the distance traveled and time, so there’s always a certain delay. On flat routes, the pace can be useful to assess performance, which is why workouts can be adjusted by pace and not just heart rate. Less experienced runners don’t always manage to maintain their target pace, which is why the more responsive pace data can be very helpful in certain cases.
According to Garmin, the Forerunner update also has an automatic key lock for indoor climbing sessions that avoids accidental inputs that can happen when buttons are pushed inadvertently. Additionally, Garmin has addressed several bugs, including more serious issues such as possibly recurring reboots or displays that turn off. Lastly, problems with the Garmin Run Coach have also been fixed.
