Garmin has unveiled two successors to the Edge 540, which retails for $350 on Amazon. The main difference between the Edge 550 and the Edge 850 is that the more expensive model has a touchscreen instead of just physical buttons. One of the most significant hardware upgrades is the 2.7-inch display with 600 x 420 pixels, which is said to be brighter than ever before, although Garmin has not provided specific details regarding the brightness.
The free Garmin Cycling Coach can create training plans that take the user's route and fitness into account. The bike computer is also intended to identify the rider's strengths and weaknesses in order to help them improve their performance. Additionally, the new Garmin Edge models can show cyclists when and how much water they should drink, while real-time weather updates should help riders avoid rain showers.
A new feature called GroupRide allows users to compare data such as speed, heart rate, cadence or power with training partners or others. With a GPS frequency of 5Hz, routes can be recorded more precisely. Only the Edge 850 sports an integrated speaker, which allows the bike computer to function as an electronic bell, and an NFC chip for contactless payments via Garmin Pay is also onboard. Garmin advertises a battery life of 12 hours with intensive use or 36 hours in power-saving mode.
Price and availability
Garmin's latest bike computers are now available at the manufacturer's official online store. The Garmin Edge 850 with a touchscreen costs $599, while the Edge 550 without a touchscreen retails for $499.
