From ultra-light to rugged: Pitaka cases for iPhone 18 Pro (Max) in review

Pitaka cases for the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) review summary: Three solutions
With the Edge, Summa, and Cairn, Pitaka offers three different cases for the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) and iPhone 17 Pro (Max), each with different strengths, even though they are all made of aramid fiber. At about 1 mm thick and just over 20 g, the Pitaka Edge Case is particularly thin and lightweight. It adds virtually no bulk, protects the expensive device from scratches, and also gives it a colorful design of your choice.
The Pitaka Summa Case is slightly thicker and heavier, but also significantly more durable. It offers better protection along with a variety of color options and an elegant design. The Pitaka Cairn Case provides the highest level of protection, featuring reinforced corners that offer better protection in the event of a fall, among other features. However, it’s also the heaviest model with the most rugged design.
Ultimately, all three iPhone cases in the test performed well—each in its own way. However, they aren’t entirely free of weaknesses. While MagSafe works, for example, the cases do not offer as much added value as some competing models. Here, the focus is more on design and protection and less on additional features.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Pitaka Edge Case is $59.99 for the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) and iPhone 17 Pro (Max). The same MSRP applies to the Cairn Case. The Summa Case has an MSRP of $79.99.

Pitaka currently offers three different case series, all of which are available for the brand-new iPhone 18 Pro (Max). What do the Pitaka Edge (formerly Ultra-Slim), Cairn (formerly ProGuard), and Summa (formerly UltraGuard) offer, and what sets them apart? Our review reveals all.
Similarities: iPhone cases made of aramid fiber
As is typical of Pitaka, all the cases are made of aramid fiber. This is a high-performance, aerospace-grade synthetic fiber that is particularly durable. This not only makes the cases lightweight and sturdy but also gives them their characteristic woven pattern on the back. Among other properties, aramid offers high tensile strength and temperature resistance. The cases feel pleasant to the touch.
All three cases feature a magnetic ring built into the interior. This allows them to support MagSafe, meaning that the iPhone inside the case can still be charged wirelessly and used with compatible accessories. However, this is common for many iPhone cases on the market.
All buttons on the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) and iPhone 17 Pro (Max) continue to function without any issues in all of the Pitaka cases we tested, even though there are a few differences in their exact design. Buyers will, however, have to do without extras like an integrated stand, such as the one offered by the Torras Ostand Q3 Air Pro.
We were particularly impressed by the sustainability of the packaging. On the outside, Pitaka uses printed cardboard. Inside, two molded inserts made from bagasse and bamboo pulp protect the case during shipping. Bagasse is a sustainable raw material produced as a byproduct of sugarcane processing, while bamboo pulp is also an environmentally friendly and rapidly renewable raw material.
Pitaka Edge: Exceptionally thin and lightweight
Let’s take a look at the differences between Pitaka’s three current cases for the iPhone 18 Pro (Max), which also fit the iPhone 17 Pro (Max) because Apple has not changed the design. The Pitaka Edge Case is the manufacturer’s thinnest and lightest case. It is only about 1 mm thick and weighs about 21 g.
As a result, the Edge case adds virtually no bulk and makes the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) and its predecessor barely any larger and only slightly heavier. In addition to the thin material, this low weight is achieved in part through cutouts around the buttons on the left and right. The PitaTap, however, sits over the Camera Control. Its capacitive layer, integrated into the aramid fiber, allows the iPhone’s Camera Control to remain usable, which worked reliably in our testing.
Due to its thin material—a combination of aramid fiber, TPU, and Mammoth Resin—the Pitaka Edge Case offers only light protection for the device. The iPhone is protected from scratches, primarily on the back and sides. The camera module is also surrounded by a raised rim. On the front, however, the case protrudes only minimally beyond the screen, so the display receives hardly any protection. On the other hand, based on our experience, putting the case on a compatible iPhone is particularly easy.
Pitaka Summa: Elegant and protective
At just under $80 (MSRP), the Pitaka Summa Case is the manufacturer’s most expensive case for the iPhone 18 Pro (Max) and iPhone 17 Pro (Max). At about 2 mm thick and 32 g, it is thicker and heavier than the Edge, but it also offers greater protection. Pitaka advertises military-grade durability according to MIL-STD-810H.
To achieve this, the manufacturer fuses the aramid fiber with Orca Resin, a special resin designed to provide 200 percent greater strength and higher impact resistance. The manufacturer also combines this with elastic TPU. With its unibody design, the Pitaka Summa case is designed to withstand drops from a height of 1.22 m. Of course, there’s no guarantee. But in our testing, the case—with its relatively soft edges—handled everyday use and various stress tests with ease.
Another difference from the ultra-thin Edge is that the Summa case also protects the display to a certain extent. The case rises just over one millimeter above the display. This not only ensures a secure fit on the device but also prevents scratches when placing the iPhone face-down on a smooth surface. However, based on our experience, the back of the Summa case is quite prone to fingerprints and quickly loses its pristine appearance—especially in the black version. It’s also a bit trickier to put on.
Pitaka Cairn: Rugged case with corner protection
The Pitaka Cairn Case is even more rugged. Here, the manufacturer also touts MIL-STD-810H compliance as well as drop tests from a height of 2.44 m. Bow-Arc Corner Protection 2.0 is designed to provide smartphones with particularly good protection during drops and gives the case a rugged look.
The arched cushioning structures at the four corners compress like air cushions upon impact, thereby absorbing energy. The principle is similar to the airbag structure from Torras, which we recently tested in the Torras Ostand Q3 Air Pro iPhone 18 case. Here, too, we did not drop the case—with the iPhone 18 Pro inside—from the full 2.44 m. However, both the case and phone withstood a few drops from a lower height without any issues.
In other respects as well, the design of the Cairn Case is less elegant and understated than that of the Summa Case. It also completely encloses the sides of the iPhone 17/18 Pro (Max) and extends slightly above the display to protect it from scratches. On the back, the camera module is also surrounded by a raised ring. One positive aspect is that the case adds about 5 mm less to the phone’s length than the very generously sized Torras Ostand Q3 Air Pro.
As with the Summa, Pitaka has integrated a capacitive button with reinforced glass for the iPhone’s Camera Control, which works flawlessly. However, the manufacturer does not use Orca Resin in this case; instead, the Cairn case relies solely on aramid fiber and TPU. In practice, we found it slightly easier to put on than the Summa case.
