Free lifetime Supercharging transfers are back on the menu to boost sales of new Teslas
Last quarter, Tesla announced a spree of incentives aimed to pad its year-end delivery numbers before the government's tax credit expired for cars like the Model 3. Besides nudging prospective owners with the urgence to take delivery before the federal subsidy evaporates, Tesla also announced free supercharging transfers that were supposed to only last until January 1.
Well, that same free lifetime Tesla supercharging transfer offer is back on the incentives menu, barely a month after it expired last time. Apparently, those lucky souls who currently have free Tesla charging on their account can transfer it to a brand new Tesla, be it the Model Y, Model S, or Model X. The Model 3 is excluded from that juicy offer just as Tesla is releasing the first Highland facelift units in the US.
The free supercharging for life transfer offer will run until March 31, or just before Tesla has to report its first quarter numbers which it already warned could be rather weak amidst an EV market "slowdown." With the free lifetime charging transfers that can be applied towards the delivery of a brand new Model Y, Tesla may also be trying to clean up the current version on the runup to the Juniper facelift release next quarter.
In any case, free supercharging is a great perk that people would probably want to keep indefinitely, so such transfer campaigns are bound to have some response even though Tesla capped the total annual amount "for Teslas ordered after January 1, 2017," where "400 kWh of free Supercharging credits (roughly 1,000 miles) will be included annually so that all owners can continue to enjoy free Supercharging during travel."
