Ford is recalling and stopping the sale of the Mustang Mach-E globally. The issue is a dangerous fault on the lock that affects more than 300,000 units and could potentially prevent passengers from egressing.

Ford has issued a global recall and stop-sale order for the Mustang Mach-E over a problem with the door locks. The issue could potentially trap passengers inside and pose a risk to life during emergencies. The American auto giant’s safety notice affects more than 300,000 Mustang Mach-E produced between 2021 and 2025.

Ford has traced the problem to the software controlling the 12-volt battery. The front doors could preserve their last lock or unlock status when the battery level drops below 8.4 volts. As such, the doors might become inoperable from the outside when riders exit the car and close the door mechanically.

The rear doors are even more prone as they do not have mechanical overrides, putting younger passengers at greater risk of being stuck.

Almost 200,000 Mustang Mach-Es are affected in the US, with another 32,500 units across the border in Canada. Ford will also process more than 120,000 EVs in other markets worldwide. It has asked dealers to pause deliveries and test drives until it provides a solution.

The fix, however, is more complicated than what an over-the-air update can handle. Owners must head to their dealerships for the powertrain to be reprogrammed. Ford hopes to have a remedy available in the third quarter of 2025 and will provide instructions by email.
