For Sony A6900 and others: Sony said to develop fully stacked APS-C sensor

The Sony A6700 ($1,498 on Amazon) is now over three years old. A successor may finally be on the horizon, as SonyAlphaRumors has obtained details about Sony’s next-generation APS-C sensor from several reliable sources. Just like the sensor in the Sony A6700, this sensor is said to be capable of capturing photos with a resolution of 26.0 megapixels.

While there are no improvements in terms of photo resolution, this new sensor is said to be capable of being read out at up to 124 times per second at full resolution. This reportedly makes it possible to record 6K video at up to 120 frames per second, whereas the older sensor was limited to 4K video. Since this is a fully stacked CMOS sensor with dual-gain ISO, image quality in low light should also be significantly better than that of the previous model, both in terms of image noise and dynamic range at high ISO settings.

It’s also exciting that Sony is reportedly developing not only a color version with a Bayer filter but also a monochrome version. While sensors without color filters can only capture black-and-white photos and videos, they achieve significantly higher light sensitivity. According to SonyAlphaRumors, it is considered a certainty that this sensor will be released. However, no further details regarding the timeline are known at this time. It is also unclear whether this sensor will first be shipped as part of the Sony A6900, the Sony FX30 II, or another camera.
