A new dungeon crawler RPG was announced on February 25 and its trailer immediately calls the Gothic series to mind. That’s no surprise, as Cralon was created by former Piranha Bytes developers.

In Cralon, players step into the shoes of the titular hero, Cralon the Brave, who sets out to hunt down a demon terrorizing a nearby village. However, while following its trail, he tumbles into an ancient mine shaft, the game's true setting.

To find a way back to the surface, players navigate a dark labyrinth filled with dangers and secrets. The branching cave system features diverse biomes, including underground forests, swamps and cemeteries. Alongside melee and ranged combat, a dynamic stealth system comes into play, using light sources to determine visibility, much like in the Thief series.

The mine is home to a variety of creatures and not all are hostile toward Cralon. Fully voiced dialogues with multiple choices aim to give players more freedom in how they approach the game. While no release date has been announced yet, the reveal trailer already offers a glimpse of the gameplay:

Cralon is the debut title from Pithead Studio, founded in July 2024 by genre veterans Jennifer and Björn Pankratz. Both were lead developers at Piranha Bytes, the studio behind the Gothic series, and their influence is already evident in the trailer. The protagonist’s few spoken words instantly evoke the distinctive style of those cult RPGs. Unlike Gothic, however, Cralon adopts a first-person perspective.

Drawing inspiration from classics like Ultima Underworld 1 & 2, the developers aim to blend 3D dungeon crawling with RPG and adventure elements. Following Piranha Bytes' closure in June 2024, Cralon could offer a promising alternative for disappointed fans.
