EVGA SC17
The EVGA SC17 is an ultra-performance gaming laptop with remarkable gaming capabilities. It is meant to cater to hardcore gamers, overclockers and performance enthusiasts. It is considered as the world's first true overclocking laptop due to it having its CMOS button directly on the chassis. The laptop is designed to be both sleek and sophisticated with a semi-matte black unibody. It comes with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition, a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7-6820HK processor, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphic card, a 256 GB SSD and an additional 1 TB hard drive. Its 17 inches screen is capable of displaying 3840 x 2160 resolution at 60 Hz, which delivers eye-watering images during engaging action scenes, but it suffers from slight LED backlight bleeding. It has 32 GB DDR4 RAM and a white LED backlit keyboard with scissor-switch keys. The keyboard light can be adjusted through a hotkey or EVGA Precision Mobile and it is only for brightness and effect settings. There is no DVD burner and the connectivity options fell a bit short by only having two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 3.1 port, an HDMI 1.4 port, two mini DisplayPort connectors, a Gigabit LAN port, a headphone jack and a microphone jack. Its integrated webcam is able to record in Full HD resolution. The laptop weighs 3.69 kg and the battery life can last up to 104.26 minutes based on the Nvidia Battery test.Specifications

New contender. EVGA shows the gaming notebook market how it's done with the excellent SC17. If first impressions are everything, then the SC17 is already hitting the ground running at full speed.

EVGA did an amazing job for its first notebook product. It offered everything that a modern notebook gamer wants. It is price competitive with MSI gaming notebooks too. At press time EVGA SC17 is discounted to $2499 making it rather nice buy for a gaming notebook. We were impressed to be able to play the latest games at decent resolutions. EVGA SC17 offers exceptional performance with the incredibly fast CPU, GPU, 32GB RAM and plenty of storage and even the 4K display. This is a first of many, we believe and people who would like smaller resolution will probably get an option too. We didn’t find any problems by playing games at lower than 3840x2160 resolution when needed. Even the fastest notebook today cannot cope with 4K content at decent frame rates.

We have to admit that, given that the EVGA SC17 is a first-effort laptop from a first-time notebook maker, we expected a product rougher around the edges. Instead, EVGA proved it could produce a world-class gaming notebook with all the polish we’d expect from a major brand. It did well almost everywhere, and that’s saying a lot.

Gaming laptops aimed at enthusiast users typically deliver high levels of portable performance with a customary list of caveats. These can include, but aren't limited to, poor battery life, plastic build quality, excessive heat and noise, average keyboards, lacklustre displays, plus a good dose of bloatware.

After spending a few solid days with the EVGA SC17 gaming notebook, I’ve really fallen for it. The design and style, the all-metal body, the keyboard, the performance of the CPU and GPU all add up to an impressive package for gamers that want to take their passion on the go. Little extras like the integrated overclocking utility, a BIOS reset switch and keyboard shortcuts for changing performance profiles really add to the idea of quality and completeness. Yes, this is still a very expensive, very heavy notebook, but all that size and weight has a purpose – to bring desktop quality gaming with you in your backpack. We know that EVGA is planning a version later this year with a G-Sync display, but at what resolution and time frame I’m not sure.

More power, same features. The impressive overclock-ready SC17 is now officially on the Pascal train, but its continuing lack of features puts the notebook at a disadvantage in the 17-inch gaming category.

If you're willing to spend $4000 on a laptop that's not quite as portable (albeit likely more powerful) than those offered by other vendors in the space, it's hard to imagine or find a more capable choice. Where other vendors often sacrifice performance on the altar of aesthetics, EVGA have veered wildly in the other direction.

The best GTX 1060 laptop.. almost. "Thin-and-light" without the "light". The SC15 is hefty but not bulky and fast but not noisy. It's close to being everything we're looking for in a premium gaming laptop under $2000 USD.

EVGA:
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M:
Fast high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
6820HK: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7700HQ: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture. Besides four CPU cores (including Hyper Threading), the chips also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU and is manufactured in an improved 14 nm process.

2.93 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
4.131 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
81.28%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
