Chinese smartphone maker Vivo continues to push the boundaries of traditional smartphone design with its second-generation NEX. The new NEX Dual Display Edition follows in the footsteps of the original NEX by featuring an all-display screen 6.39-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080 x 2430 resolution sans a notch or even a punch hole. This time around the company has opted to eliminate its pop-up selfie camera for a secondary display on the rear of the device leaving it without a front-facing camera at all.
The logic behind the device is that the main cameras on the rear are invariably of a higher quality than front-facing selfie cameras. To take advantage of this, the NEX 2 features a large 5.49-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. This allows users to see their selfies using the high-quality triple camera array sitting above the display on the rear of the device. The main shooter is a 12MP IMX363 sensor sourced from Sony with OIS and an f/1.79 aperture. The secondary sensor is rated at just 2MP with an f/1.8 aperture, but specializes in night-time video shooting; while the third utilizes Time of Flight (ToF) tech to deliver advanced computational 3D depth mapping.
It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset matched with a more than ample 10 GB of RAM. Storage is a solid 128 GB in capacity although this is non-expandable. To unlock the device, you can use 3D facial recognition if the device is facing the rear, or the in-display fingerprint sensor built into the primary display. It is fitted with a decent 3,500 mAh battery that supports 10V/2.25A fast charging and ships with Android 9 Pie with Vivo Funtouch OS 4.5 skin.
The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is up for pre-order in China now, and will ship on December 29 for the equivalent of just US$720.
