Disappointment at full price, but worth it as a bargain – Motorola Moto G47 Smartphone Review

Question of price.

With the Motorola Moto G47, the manufacturer is introducing an affordable mid-range phone. It’s stylish and features a high-resolution main camera, but it also shows some cost-cutting measures. Can it really stand out in the flood of affordable phones?

Verdict on the Motorola Moto G47

The Motorola Moto G47 has already dropped significantly in price online, and that’s really good news for the model: At full price it’s hardly competitive with last year’s models.

For example, the screen is less bright and has a lower resolution, and many other features—such as Wi-Fi speed, battery life, and speakers—are average at best.

Compared to the Moto G37, you get more RAM, faster storage, and a better camera system. The camera takes decent photos, but it lacks an ultra-wide-angle lens, and its zoom capabilities are very limited.

If you can get the Motorola Moto G47 at a good price, you can’t go wrong and will enjoy its stylish design. However, there are still strong competitors from last year that haven’t yet been affected by the cost-cutting measures triggered by the memory crisis.

Pros

+ schickes, sauber verarbeitetes Gehäuse
+ erweiterbarer Speicher (microSD)
+ alltagstaugliche Kameras
+ flottes 120-Hz-Display

Cons

- zum Vollpreis kaum konkurrenzfähig
- niedrige Displayauflösung und Helligkeit
- schwache Prozessorleistung
- nur drei Jahre Updates
- kein Ultraweitwinkelobjektiv
- höhenlastiger Klang
- keine eSIM-Unterstützung

Case and features – Attractive colors, good workmanship

Even Motorola’s budget phones now come in stylish Pantone colors for their casings: Impenetrable, a dark gray; Nautical Blue, a medium blue; and Fuchsia Red, a shade of pink, are available for the Motorola Moto G47.

All feature a back cover made of a soft, faux-leather-like material. The phone is well-built overall, though the transition to the frame isn’t quite as smooth as on more expensive models.

It comes with 128 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM. One standout feature—which is no longer a given even in budget smartphones—is the 3.5mm audio jack. NFC for contactless payments is also included. eSIM is not supported.

If you want to expand the storage, you can do so using a microSD card with up to 1 TB of capacity. In our tests, the card reader worked reasonably quickly.

Communication and operation – Sufficiently fast Wi-Fi

You can expect speeds of around 320 Mbit/s from the Wi-Fi modem. This corresponds to the standard transmission rates of Wi-Fi 5 and should be sufficient for users without high demands.

There are many 4G and 5G frequencies available. However, the Moto G47 is not a world phone, so before traveling abroad, you should check whether the phone can connect to mobile data locally.

Reception was solid during our two-week testing period.

The screen can display up to 120 frames per second and responds very quickly to input. A fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button on the right side. Once your fingerprints are registered, it unlocks the phone reliably and with minimal delay. Face recognition via the front camera is also available, but it’s not quite as secure.

Software and Sustainability – Only Three Years of Security

Motorola is known for leaving stock Android largely untouched and offloading additional features into its own apps, making them easier to update. Android 16 comes preinstalled; as of the time of testing, the security patches date from May 2026 and are therefore already somewhat outdated.

The manufacturer promises three years of updates. That’s not exactly generous; anyone who wants to keep their phone for a long time may eventually find themselves without up-to-date software.

The packaging is plastic-free, but unfortunately, there is no other information available regarding the device’s sustainability.

Cameras – Main camera with high pixel count

Front-facing camera photo
Front-facing camera photo

A 108-megapixel main camera is touted as the highlight of the Moto G47. But does it actually take good pictures? That depends on your personal expectations: Generally speaking, sharpness and exposure are only average, but sufficient for everyday use as long as you don’t zoom in too much on the photos.

A 2-megapixel telephoto lens rounds out the rear camera system, but due to its low resolution, it’s only suitable for snapshots.

On the front, there’s an 8-megapixel camera for selfies. These turn out quite well in bright conditions and can even be zoomed in on a little.

Display – Motorola phone with IPS screen

Buyers will have to settle for less when it comes to the screen: A relatively low resolution of 1,604 x 720 pixels and a rather modest peak brightness of around 800 nits result in an image that is slightly blurry and not impressive in very bright environments.

Color accuracy is also only average. However, thanks to the IPS panel, the screen at least does not suffer from PWM flicker.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.
Screen flickering / PWM not detected

In comparison: 52 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 7738 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.
       Response Time Black to White
22.9 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 11.9 ms rise

The screen shows good response rates in our tests, but may be too slow for competitive gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.1 (minimum) to 240 (maximum) ms. » 52 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (19.8 ms).
Response Time 50% Grey to 80% Grey
34.6 ms ... rise ↗ and fall ↘ combined↗ 17.7 ms rise

The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers.
In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.165 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 49 % of all devices are better.
This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (30.9 ms).

Performance, Emissions, and Battery Life – Lasts a Full Day

The MediaTek Dimensity 6300 is used as the processor. Even in this budget price range, it isn’t particularly fast and doesn’t always deliver smooth performance, even when simply scrolling through the menu.

The storage, which uses UFS 2.1 flash, is of average speed: there are certainly budget phones that offer faster load times.

The device gets noticeably warm, but this isn’t a problem at room temperature. We didn’t observe any throttling under prolonged load.

The speaker on the bottom edge is supplemented by the earpiece, allowing for stereo effects. While the sound can get quite loud if desired, the balance is only moderate and quite treble-heavy. This makes listening to music or movie soundtracks hardly enjoyable.

You can connect headphones and speakers via the 3.5mm jack or Bluetooth, and this works without any issues. The most important codecs are available for wireless audio transmission.

Power consumption tends to be on the high side under light load, but battery life with the 5,200 mAh battery is on par with others in its class: The phone lasted just under 18 hours in our Wi-Fi test. This should make it easy to get through a workday without a nearby outlet. Charging takes about 2 hours at most.
