We face a skeleton in Diablo II: Resurrected VR
Diablo II: Resurrected in a VR headset: A genuine community-made VR mod has just surfaced for Diablo 2: Resurrected, transforming the game from its isometric perspective into true stereoscopic 3D, including a first-person mode. The mod is brand-new and, naturally, not yet final, but it can already be downloaded and tested via GitHub.

Diablo II originally came out in 2000, but more than 20 years later, the remaster Diablo II: Resurrected (2021) gave the game a visual and gameplay overhaul. No surprise, then, that many fans—including the author of these lines—still consider the second installment by far the best, with neither the third nor fourth game quite measuring up.

The fact that Blizzard sees it the same way can also be seen in the fact that, in February 2026, Reign of the Warlock was released as a new expansion for Diablo 2, roughly 25 years after the last expansion, Lord of Destruction, adding a new character and gameplay elements.

The D2R VR mod by developer natpoh (GitHub) is based on the work of GitHub user emmericp, who had already freed Diablo 2 from its isometric view in his mod and added a variable 3D perspective, also including an optional first-person view. The fact that mods like these are even possible is thanks to the Resurrected remaster, which converted the original Diablo's 2D background graphics into 3D assets.

The mod should only be used and tested in single-player mode, as the developer warns that using it otherwise could result in online accounts being banned. The project is currently at version 0.141, but development is ongoing to eliminate bugs and further improve the experience.

The developer has also set up a feedback channel on Discord, where users can report bugs, submit ideas, and follow the development as it happens. Installation also appears to be fairly straightforward, as there is an installer that handles the setup. Of course, you need to own your own copy of Diablo II: Resurrected to try the mod.
