Fair deal. Dell bundles a pricewise, attractive 17 inch multimedia laptop with its Inspiron 17R. You get a Sandy Bridge processor from Intel and a midrange graphics card from Nvidia for 700 euros. Is this a deal you can't refuse?

Dell's 2nd generation of Inspiron 17R laptops doesn't feature a huge amount of change but what changes that were made are pretty good. This includes the move to the new Core i5-2410M processor that boosts performance and battery life over the past model. Also included are two USB 3.0 ports that give it some of the best overall port selection for a consumer class 17-inch laptop.

Battery life is actually pretty decent with this powerhouse of a laptop. Expect to get almost 4 hours of life with the included 9-cell battery (a 6-cell is available too) if you do intend on making this large laptop portable.

The 17R is a nice piece of work. It's very affordable and looks good anywhere you take it. At the time of this writing, some hefty discounts were available on Dell's site, making a 17R configured similarly to ours only $800. Even sans discount, the 17R stands high on our list of desktop replacements.

For $899, the Dell Inspiron 17R offers a great display and audio with plenty of performance for multimedia mavens and even gamers. Its impressive battery life, while not necessary on a desktop replacement, is a bonus. Our only major complaint is the 17R's slow boot time. Those looking for even better sound and style should check out the Dell XPS 17, which, for the same price, gets you a more elegant design, the same processor, an Nvidia GT550M GPU, 4GB of RAM, but no Blu-ray and a 500GB hard drive. But it's hard to beat the Inspiron 17R's winning combination of specs, performance, and value.

The Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) is a desktop replacement laptop that provides a competitive CPU and GPU for its price. The addition of the WiDi feature only adds to its value, and while its huge battery may not make entice road warriors, those who like to buzz around the house will appreciate how long they will be able to go unplugged. If you're looking for better performance in gaming and media creation, then it's hard to overlook our Editors' Choice, the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt). If your pockets aren't that deep the Inspiron 17R (N7110) can still provide.

Series:
A leading brand for laptops and computers in the world, Dell, designs and manufactures laptop in different categories to fulfill the computing requirements of different users around the world. The Dell Inspiron 17R constitutes one of the latest products from Dell – it is expected to be capable to meed the needs of consumers on a sophisticated desktop replacement laptop. A 17 inch display is the perfect size for those who prefer to use their laptop as a desktop replacement. While it’s actually made of plastic, they’ve successfully put a nice-looking brushed metal finish on its lid and keyboard tray. In today's desktop replacement market with a wide range of choices from low-end to high-end laptops, this laptop has a clear advantage – it offers a variety of hardware configurations. This laptop can be purchased with either Intel’s i3, i5 or i7 processor. Thus, it proves to be a better choice as consumers will get the best value for money with their purchase.
However, being a desktop replacement means that the battery life isn’t going to be great. Such as what are typically expected for a 17 inch laptop, this laptop doesn’t offer long battery life as well as portability since it is also bulky and quite heavy. Besides, its low quality display is another huge let down because the screen quality could be much better if it came with a full-HD display instead of the current 1,600 x 900 pixels display. It isn’t the laptop for those who want portability and ultimate gaming performance. But if you’re looking for a budget-friendly laptop for a desktop replacement with multimedia capabilities, the Dell Inspiron 17R is a great-value option.

DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
