Custom Snapdragon chip of OnePlus 13 seemingly beats Apple A18 Pro in efficiency
Qualcomm will officially introduce its next-gen flagship mobile SoC at the Snapdragon Summit event. It's still unclear whether the chip will be named Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, Snapdragon 8 Extreme Edition, or something else, but the OnePlus 13 is expected to be among the first phones to feature it.
OnePlus hasn't revealed much about its upcoming flagship phone, but an employee named Cai Zuxuan on Weibo has just teased that it will feature a customized Snapdragon chip. What's more interesting is that the employee claims that the custom SoC will offer superior energy efficiency.
More specifically, citing OnePlus's internal data, the employee claims that the custom Snapdragon SoC can beat the Apple A18 Pro in terms of power efficiency. Cai Zuxuan says that this would make Qualcomm reclaim the top spot in the rankings.
Cai Zuxuan's Weibo post also mentions a "public version," which is said to be sub-par compared to the custom SoC. This isn't the first time someone has brought up two different versions of what's believed to be called the Snapdragon 8 Extreme Edition. An official-looking datasheet of the SoC leaked in August, which mentioned two models: SM8750 and SM8750P.
Among them, the SM8750P was believed to be a higher-end variant, with the "P" supposedly standing for "Performance." Qualcomm has been doing the same thing with its past flagship SoCs. Take the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, for example. It's a slightly overclocked variant of the standard SoC. The same overclocked chipset later appeared in Nubia smartphones, and it currently tops the AnTuTu benchmark.
However, Cai Zuxuan suggests that besides performance, there will be a strong emphasis on efficiency this time. The good news is that Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit is set to start on October 21, which isn't far from now. So, you don't need to wait to see how Qualcomm's 3 nm smartphone chip compares to the competition.
