Blackmagic Camera for iOS offers pro video recording features for grand total of free, Apple LOG supported on iPhone 15 Pro models
There are a host of pro camera apps for iOS such as Filmic Pro, CinemaP3 and others that can turn the iPhone into a full-fledged video recording device. Now, Blackmagic Design, the company behind the popular Davinci Resolve editing suite, has introduced a new professional video camera app that brings the interface and functionality of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera to the iPhone — for free.
Blackmagic Camera is a new iOS pro camera app that fully mimics the Blackmagic Camera interface. Users can adjust ISO, shutter angle, frame rate, white balance, resolution, lens selection, etc. while also being able to record in a host of codecs including H.264, HEVC, Apple ProRes 422, 422 Proxy, 422 LT, 422 HQ, and 4444.
The app also supports direct uploads to the Blackmagic Cloud through which studios can directly collaborate and access footage. It can also record directly into a Davinci Resolve timeline shared across teams. Similar to the Cinema Camera interface, the app offers a slate that contains information about the shot such as scene, reel, and take count.
Blackmagic Camera offers several features targeted at pro users. For example, the app auto creates proxies for previews and also supports clean HDMI-out devoid of any interface icons, which is great for livestreaming. Users can record 4-channel audio directly using the iPhone's microphones in AAC, Linear PCM, and IEEE Float.
The app supports external audio together with VU and PPM metering, but you may be limited by the lightning port if you are using any iPhone prior to the iPhone 15 series. Additionally, you can also display any custom LUTs directly within the Blackmagic Camera app itself.
Speaking of the iPhone 15, when used with the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Blackmagic Camera can make use of Apple LOG, which lends more flexibility for color grading in post.
It is not known whether Blackmagic Camera would eventually land on the Google Play Store for Android smartphones as iOS enables many features that apps like these make use of. That being said, apps such as Filmic Pro are available for Android even though not all features work across all Android phones.
At the outset, Blackmagic Camera seems to be a great option for those planning to use their iPhones as the primary or B-roll videography solution without having to worry about in-app purchases and recurring subscription fees.
