Battlefield 2042 could become free-to-play in the near future
Battlefield 2042's launch hasn't been particularly stellar, and EA's indifference towards its iconic title has only worsened matters. The game's player count continues to plummet as players abandon it in droves. According to industry insider Tom Henderson, EA is reportedly "looking at all the options" to breathe some new life into the franchise.
It tacitly implies that Battlefield 2042 could be offered as a free-to-play title at some point in the future. However, EA will likely restrict it to EA Play customers, as making it entirely free-to-play like PUBG: Battlegrounds will further enrage the game's already fuming player base. Additionally, players who paid upward of US$60 (US$100 for early access) could get some special perks, too.
Adopting a F2P model for Battlefield 2042 could help bring in new players, but they could move on to the next big thing just as quickly. A cursory glance at the official Battlefield 2042 subreddit tells us some people still enjoy the game. However, the overwhelming consensus is that a F2P transition will give EA an excuse to shoehorn in more microtransactions into the game.
