Bambu Lab’s MakerWorld 3D model repository is now in its open beta testing stage and can be accessed either through the website or the Bambu Handy mobile app. In a blog post, the company has explained its "one-step" printing workflow.
Firstly, the use of .3mf print profiles (instead of STL and G-code) allows MakerWorld to combine everything from print settings, orientation to arrangement and coloring, under the same model page. Bambu Lab's print profiles are not printer-specific, so users can easily select the printer, filament and build plate without creating a new profile, thanks to the cloud slicing feature which adapts to the selected hardware. And by editing the print settings on Bambu Studio as per their needs, the profile can be further tuned for one’s specific setup.
That brings us to another feature – every model page can list multiple profiles optimized for different speeds, color variations, filaments types, etc. Other users can upload their own print profiles for a model, or rate a profile uploaded by someone else, making it easy for anyone to choose the best one for themselves. The comments section can be used for more detailed feedback with pictures.
.3mf profiles make printing multi-part models very easy: every project can be separated into individual plates, say, based on color to prevent filament wastage. There is also a color change visualization feature that enables previewing the model parts in various colors, as well as the option to print multiple copies on the same plate, with the software optimizing placement of the copies on the plate.
Having faced issues with cloud printing before, Bambu Lab is careful to address safety concerns regarding incorrect or malicious print profiles that may cause overheating or clogging of the nozzle. It does so by ignoring the printer and filament settings in the uploaded print profile when cloud slicing, and re-slicing the model based on the user’s existing presets or selection of printer and filament type. In its continued commitment to inclusivity and playing nice with other companies’ printers, the Bambu Studio software supports over 40 non-Bambu printers, and this support will soon be available on MakerWorld as well.
