The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 has an iPad-like design, but not quite the quality. However it offers the flexibility of Android, the QHD screen is wonderful and strong audio, a decent amount of power and expandable storage sweeten the deal further. It’s just a shame the battery life isn’t better.

From a hardware perspective, there's not a lot missing when you compare the ZenPad 3S 10 to the new 9.7-inch iPad. The Asus is actually thinner, which may be preferable.

The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 is one of the best-designed pieces of tablet hardware I’ve yet seen. But the software made my time with it a chore, and I actively sought to not use it. That isn’t good.

And indeed, we saw a lot else to like about the ZenPad 3S 10. The impressive display, extreme trimness, media-handling performance, and audio output all make it a worthy contender among iPad Air-size Android competitors. Add in the solid performance (battery notwithstanding), the 64GB of built-in storage that's expandable via MicroSD, and the relatively light weight, and you’ll find the ZenPad 3S 10 an attractive package for $299, based on what else is on the market around that price.

ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 review: The iPad Air running Android
Source: Android Police English Archive.org version
The ZenPad 3S 10 is a mixed bag. While I found it good enough for what I use a tablet for (primarily media consumption and light productivity), there are so many areas where ASUS could have improved it. The bottom-firing speakers and physical navigation buttons are mild annoyances, but the lack of any multi-window functionality is a huge issue for anyone looking to be productive. In addition, the smaller battery means you will might have to bring a charger for long car trips or extended binge-watching sessions.

Asus is touting a rather large game with the ZenPad 3S 10. As I mentioned in the intro for this review, the company’s goal is to offer a solid tablet experience for both professional and personal use at an affordable price. That’s not an easy feat to achieve by any means, so did it pay off for Asus with the ZenPad 3S 10?

Asus is delivering solid value for the money at $299 for a 2048-by-1536, 10-inch, 64GB tablet. Yes, there are better tablets out there—but not for this price. The ZenPad 3S 10 gives you the multimedia chops you'd expect from a tablet costing $100-200 more. But it's important to know where the ZenPad's limits are. Android doesn't have the range of tablet-oriented games you'll find on the iOS platform, or the quality of productivity apps you'll find on Windows. And the Mediatek processor here isn't going to rock the world with its gaming performance. But, once again, you have to spend around $500 to get a better processor, or an iOS or Windows tablet with this kind of screen. Just make sure to keep it near a charger.

The Asus ZenPad 3s 10 is a solid enough Android tablet, which at £300 is cheaper than the full-sized iPads. Media fans will enjoy the excellent 9.7-inch 2K display and Hi-Res audio support and there's some useful features for families too, while performance and battery life are perfectly fine.

Asus Zenpad 3S 10 Hands-On Review
Source: Gear Open English Archive.org version
Despite its ‘iPad-alike’ tendencies, Asus has done a good job crafting a media-centric slate. It’s light, thin and has a bright display. There should also be decent audio and plenty of power for gaming. It probably won’t sway long time Apple lovers, but it’s another decent Android option out there.

Hello iPad lookalike
Source: Pocket Lint English Archive.org version
Under the hood, the ZenPad 3S 10 has a hexa-core MediaTek 8176 processor that is supported by 4GB of RAM. From our brief experience, everything seemed nice and smooth to operate, with no lag switching between various apps. There is 64GB of onboard storage with a microSD slot allowing for expansion up to 128GB.

Comment

Model: The Asus ZenPad 3s 10 is a first-rate 9.7-inch tablet. Not only is it good-looking, but it also is a solidly built tablet with its forged aluminium body. It is lightweight at 430 g and is only 5.8 mm thin. Asus aims to provide users with an immersive multimedia experience with the ZenPad 3s 10. Its 9.7-inch 2K (2048 x 1536 pixel) IPS display features wide 178-degree viewing angle and the exclusive ASUS VisualMaster and ASUS Tru2Life technologies, which provide users with a rich visual experience. Asus claims that the Tru2Life technology “enhances every pixel to deliver optimum contrast and sharpness for beautiful images that look just like real life”. This is further complemented with with the ASUS TruVivid display and ASUS Bluelight Filter, which provide real-world vibrancy. Not lacking is an equally impressive sound system as the ZenPad 3s 10 is powered with dual five-magnet speakers, which are driven by an NXP Smart Amp for clearer and louder output. The DTS Headphone:X delivers a crisp cinematic 7.1-channel surround sound experience straight to the headphones.

The ZenPad 3s 10’s performance specs are no less remarkable. Powered by a super-fast Mediatek MT8176 hexa-core processor with 4 GB RAM, the ZenPad 3s 10 will run the latest games with ease and, at the same time, afford users with the capacity to multitask comfortably. It is fitted with a high-capacity 5900 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 technology for longer productivity, which is necessary for a tablet. It comes with a 8 MP front-facing camera and a 5 MP rear snapper. The 8 MP PixelMaster camera is said to capture high-resolution photos with zero shutter lag. With its Low Light technology, images are captured up to 400% brighter at night or in low-light environments, even without the need for a flash. However, in real life situations, the camera is only usable for simple photography. Users can’t expect to get photos like from a digital camera or even a camera smartphone.

The device runs on Android 6.0 with the latest ZenUI 3.0 – Game Genie, which provides users with the much needed accessibility and improved productivity. The ZenPad 3s 10 is shipped with either 32 GB or 64 GB internal storage and its MicroSD slot allows to expand the storage capacity by up to 256 GB. Networking is supported by both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. Users may opt to accessorize the ZenPad 3s 10 with the Z Stylus. This stylus is designed to provide a natural writing and drawing experience with the ease of use of a pen, similar to Samsung’s Note series. The Folio Cover provides a stylish protection to the ZenPad 3s 10. Packed with so many features, it is no wonder that the ZenPad 3s 10 ranks highly in many reviews carried out thus far. It is certainly a great choice for someone who is looking for a very good tablet.

78.83%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
