Can you get a good laptop for just a few hundred dollars? The entry-level Asus VivoBook 15 with the AMD Ryzen 3 3200U retails for about $100 less than the Intel Core i3 version without being all that much slower.

If you're an on-budget student or writer looking for an affordable laptop that does the job and supports your mobility, this product should be your consideration. Upgradable SSD, upgradeable RAM, backlit keyboard, and ultra-slim bezel are enough to give you the best writing experience. However, some issues are still undeniable. Battery life is not so great or terrible either. It's average to mediocre, so you may need to have your power charger ready.

In addition to that, we weren’t extremely satisfied with the input devices, as the keyboard was a bit mushy, while the touchpad was inaccurate and the tracking had some latency. Also, the I/O features rather slow USB Type-A ports and lacks an Ethernet connector. A slight consolation is the MicroSD card reader plus the optional fingerprint reader.

You can’t expect a laptop that costs almost £300/$380 to be perfect. That’s not why the VivoBook 15 exists. Buying laptops that cost less than $500 comes down to weighing the pros and cons and finding the right device for your needs. In that frame, the VivoBook is fairly well-rounded in terms of features and features; however, its latest upgrade, the ASUS VivoBook 15 X515EA is money better spent. The screen is thankfully 1920 x 1080 for a far clearer picture than HD, though it lacks the same vibrancy of its ZenBook siblings, and maxes at 200 nits. The screen is perfectly usable when paired with the Core i3 CPU, and you’ll have no issues with word processing, emails, heavy web browsing, and streaming. Overall, the Asus Vivobook 15 X515JA stands out among other budget laptops I’ve reviewed at this price point. It’s not a flawless laptop by any stretch, but it is one that I’d suggest for anyone who needs a cheap, do-it-all PC at home.

Theoretically, if I were in a rush and needed a so-called throwaway laptop to perform a few quick deeds, the Asus VivoBook 15 would be likely to carry me through. It has enough power to run an older game at low-quality settings to help fulfill the nostalgia quotient. It has enough battery life to file words at a Denny's in time for the next deadline. But as this Asus VivoBook 15 review showed, performance doesn't particularly impress, which doesn't make it a laptop worth an upgrade.

The Asus VivoBook 15 won’t turn any heads with its performance or design, but all things considered, it’s a decent offering for the cost. If it weren’t for the poor screen, it might well be the standout we tested in this price range, since it is a touch faster than its peers. The storage capacity is also pretty restrictive, but that’s not unique to this machine at this price. On the positive end, its keyboard is pretty good, the battery lasts long enough to be useful, and it has an above-average port selection. If you need the essentials and won’t be put off by a couple of concessions, this VivoBook 15 model can do the job as an affordable daily driver for simple home and office tasks.

If this device had the lifespan of, say, the $289 Gateway 14, it would be a slam-dunk recommendation in the 15-inch category. As is, I think it’s a fairly close competition between the Vivobook and the Acer Aspire 5. The Aspire is not nearly as well built or nice-looking as this device; it doesn’t have fancy accents around the touchpad or the shimmery blue color. But it has a more powerful, newer processor, and it lasted close to an hour longer on battery. And for students and other users who are doing a lot of work on the go, that may be a big consideration.

67.02%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
