Asus' second stab at a touchscreen-touchpad hybrid is head and shoulders above the first generation ScreenPad on last year's ZenBook Pro 15 UX580 in terms of usability and display quality. A few hurdles remain including the impact on battery life, grainy matte overlay, and poor viewing angles.

There's good value in the VivoBook S15 S532 in the $800-$1000 segment of portable 15-inch notebooks, as a compact and light all-round laptop for everyday use and perhaps some occasional gaming. However, you'll have to accept the compromises in the screen quality and battery life, as well as make sure you understand this is not as competent at gaming as the larger-sized options in the same prince-range.

ASUS VivoBook S15 S532 is a really, really decent device. We found it to be a good step up from its predecessor, as they haven’t changed anything significant from the VivoBook S15 S530 but instead improved and added features.

The latest Asus VivoBook S15 S531F is ideal for those seeking bang for the buck as it blends a large 15.6-inch Full HD display, an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, an NVIDIA MX250 GPU and a nippy SSD into a good looking chassis for just slightly over RM3,000. If you can live with the middling battery life and beef up the RAM, this notebook proves to be a worthy workhorse that offers great value and performance for what you pay for.

Asus is trying to push one of its flagship features into more accessible models, and the ScreenPad certainly makes the VivoBook S15 stand out in the premium laptop segment. It's much improved compared to the first-gen version, but still has some quirks. It doesn't really have any killer app either – there aren't any situations that hugely benefit from having it. Still, it's very cool and it feels futuristic while being much less disruptive than the massive ScreenPad+ second screen on the ZenBook Duo (UX481).

Asus VivoBook S15 is no doubt a stylish laptop, with the promise of a high-end processor at a price that is not too high. Its display, performance and battery life make it an appealing choice. What is a let down is the audio and the trackpad. The ScreenPad 2.0 while an interesting idea needs more improvement in my view. If you want a laptop with the latest Intel processor and don’t want to pay more than Rs 70,000, this is one of the options to consider.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce MX250: Successor of the MX150 and still based on the same Pascal GP108 chip (similar to the desktop GT 1030) but with higher clock speeds. Available in two versions, a normal 25 Watt version and a low power version with 10 Watt TDP and reduced performance. The 25 Watt version e.g. offers a 21% higher boost clock than the old MX150 leading to a 5% performance gain.
NVIDIA GeForce MX150: Pascal GP108 based laptop graphics card and mobile version of the desktop GeForce GT 1030. Offers 384 shader cores and usually 2 GB GDDR5 with a 64 Bit memory bus. Manufactured in 14nm.
Intel UHD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2, 24 EUs) found on some Kaby-Lake-Refresh CPU models (15 W ULV series). Technically identical to the previous Kaby-Lake GPU called HD Graphics 620.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Core i5:
i5-8265U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.9 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Comet Lake:
i7-10510U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced on 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.8 and 4.9 GHz (all 4 cores 4.3 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2666 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default).
