This 2021 Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is the most powerful full-size performance/gaming laptop you can get right now with AMD Ryzen 5000 hardware and Nvidia RTX 3000 graphics. Compared to the previous generation, this is silent and friendlier to use with daily multitasking and casual tasks, 10-20% faster in games and workloads, and significantly quieter. But there's still a catch: both the CPU and GPU run hot with games on the default power profiles, however, you can address this in the Manual mode. In this review we're getting in-depth on all the important aspects you should consider before deciding on this one.

The ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 is not your ordinary gaming laptop. It has some very exciting display options, including the new standard for mobile gameplay – a 1440p 165Hz IPS panel. Also, you get pretty much the best in terms of mobile CPU power, as well, however, we still feel it lacks behind the Comet Lake-H processors when it comes to gaming.

The Asus ROG Strix SCAR 17 G733 is one of the most powerful gaming laptops money can buy right now, and will play any modern game with ease. Its design is unashamedly in-your-face – and while that may not appeal to everyone, if you want a gaming laptop that will get a reaction with its resplendent RGB lighting, then this may be for you. However, the price is high, and will be hard to justify for many people.

Asus has outdone itself with these new Strix Scar models' design and features, but I can't tell you what the performance is like just yet. Although I spent some time using one, it was a preproduction model so it wasn't 100% the same thing as what you'll be able to get when they start shipping sometime in the first quarter. Also, no pricing was announced for either size.

Asus has quickly become one of the biggest supporters of mobile AMD Ryzen by entrusting the series to power some of its most well-known gaming laptops. The latest ROG Strix Scar 17 forgoes Intel entirely for a liquid metal-cooled Ryzen 9 5900HX to be as fast as an Intel Core i9 desktop PC.

All told, the 2021 version of the Strix Scar 17 is a great gaming machine. It's light and compact enough to be portable and has the battery power and specs to back that up to. It's also easy-on-the-eye both in terms of design and the gaming goodness it delivers. There are a few minor niggles - such as no webcam - and one big one - the price - but otherwise we'd happily recommend this gaming machine as a brilliant purchase that's well worth considering.

Just to put context to our testing, the ROG Strix SCAR 17 2021’s GPU is a 130W TGP card. This is outclassed by the 165W TGP of the Lenovo in our comparison. Still, these are very high numbers for a laptop not running a jet engine cooler. In some games, particularly CSGO, the GPU actually relaxes a bit and can dip to around 300FPS but this allows the GPU to operate at a lower clock speed as well and not tax the CPU as much as the maximum draw. That said, this is evident in our battery test where general use sees the ROG Strix SCAR 17 2021 last almost 30 minutes longer versus the Legion. Gaming does match them but that’s a moot point as the best gaming experience would be when plugged in. I can easily recommend this laptop for looks alone but as I mentioned, some configurations are a better value than others and would prove an excellent gaming platform regardless.

While I may call Asus’ 17-inch beast my dream laptop, other options on the market surpass it in terms of gaming specs and price. The Alienware m17 R4 delivers higher performance in several demanding PC games, and there are more affordable models available at around $2,499 ($500 less than the Asus). Still, if you’re looking for a gaming laptop that never fails to impress, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 won’t disappoint.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar G733 may not have the gaming pace of its rival, but there’s still enough power here to handle games at the screen’s native resolution. This machine fights back with more CPU ability, better thermal operation, superior battery life, a top-notch keyboard and great speakers. The bold looks won’t suit everyone, and the Asus is undeniably expensive too. However, if you’re looking to buy a high-end laptop, this machine combines eye-catching design with well-balanced performance.

As I said right at the start, the Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is as good as it gets for gaming laptops. It would be great if it could be as slim as a Razer Blade, and your back won’t thank you when lugging this 2.7kg machine around, but heavyweight components need to breathe if you want to extract maximum power from them. This bulk, along with the overdraft-inducing cost, is the price you pay for a laptop designed for one thing: to play games at the fastest possible frame rates. All the quality that Asus packs in for company – and note the speakers are booming with bass – is simply a bonus.

The end result is a superb laptop that answers all the important questions and which does a fine job. Most of the negative points we raise are inherent to building a high end gaming laptop, so yes it is large, and yes it is heavy, and yes the power adapter is chunky. It is also unfortunate the cooling system blows hot air on your mousing hand and takes up space that might be used by the ports and connectors but we can understand the thinking that led us to this point. The one unforgivable sin that Asus has committed with the ROG Strix Scar SE is the removal of the webcam which obviously belongs in the top bezel of the screen.

With a retail price that is pretty close to $4000, the ROG Strix Scar 17 SE is not for everyone. It is for those who want absolute cutting-edge technology and top-tier performance in a laptop form factor. While you can build a far more powerful PC for less than the retail price of the ROG Strix Scar 17 SE, you won’t be able to carry around that machine as easily as the Scar 17 SE. Overall, it’s an excellent performing device with great thermals and a highly recommended laptop from us to professional gamers, streamers, and content creators.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar 17 SE is one of the most powerful laptops for gaming. Yet it lacks a webcam or any kind of biometric authentication. Speakers and battery life are not that great and neither is the device’s portability. However, it has most of the elements that make a sound performance-oriented machine. The gamer aesthetics outside and other aspects easily make it one of the most flamboyant laptops you can buy. One thing that has to be thought thoroughly is whether your gaming needs require you to spend Rs 3,99,990, which is the price of my review unit. There are other very capable machines as well that may not be so processor-intrinsic, but make up for it in other areas. If your goal still remains to get the fastest machine money can buy, then the Strix Scar 17 SE is the laptop to beat.

The Strix Scar 17 Special Edition is the ultimate gaming machine. It features the looks that can turn eyes and the performance to run most titles without any hiccups. However, at the price of Rs 3,59,990 (our exact variant costs Rs 3,99,990), the laptop is one costly affair. I recommend this for purists who want the absolute best in terms of specifications and aesthetics. For those looking for something more practical, you can consider the regular Strix Scar 17.

What we’re about to say is going to sound mad, but R75 999 is justifiable given how good the 2022 Strix Scar 17 SE is. Yes, it’s a massive amount of money, but having spent two weeks with this notebook it is absolutely worth that price. For your money you are getting an unbridled gaming experience in a slick package. Games have never looked or performed so well and we can’t help but feel that we weren’t able to take full advantage of this machine in the short time we had it despite exhaustive testing and late night gaming sessions. While it’s tough to give the 2022 Strix Scar 17 SE a perfect score given this isn’t a notebook anybody can just buy. However, if you are looking for a notebook and have R80k to spend, ASUS has created a beast in the 2022 Strix Scar 17 SE and we highly recommend it.

Review of the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 SE the most powerful gaming laptop that ASUS has in its lineup. It also comes with a cryptic secret and I'm the first person in the world to translate it. Watch for the full review on the ASUS Strix Scar 17 se. Possibly the best gaming laptop 2022.

All in all, I’m glad Asus are once more competing with the heavyweights in the segment of high-performance laptops. They didn’t revive the massive desktop-replacement G703 series of the past, so the Scar 17 SE is not as powerful as it could have been in that kind of chassis. However, it is a balanced option in this mid-sized design at under 3 kilos, and the kind of product that should better cater to the needs of current potential buyers looking for a high-performance notebook, but without requiring two power bricks and a gym membership to lug around when needed. I do look further to find find out more about the pricing of the SE series in comparison to the regular Scar 17, and especially in comparison to the competition. ROGs are usually competitively priced in most markets, so hopefully, the Scar 17 SE won’t diverge away from it. From what we know right now, the laptop should be available in stores around June 2022, so we’ll update once we know more about it. Anyway, that’s about it for this short first look at the 2022 Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 SE series.
